About the Project

A robust community resource environment is the bedrock of a healthy population. However, populations residing in historically under-resourced and socioeconomically challenged communities face significant barriers to accessing affordable resources to support their healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, and preventive healthcare. 

However, these same communities may possess viable resources and assets that, when properly promoted and sustained, may promote demand for healthy lifestyles. The stability and maintenance of proximally-located, affordable wellness assets are crucial, especially as "urban revitalization" and gentrification efforts continue to transform sociodemographic and economic environments in urban communities across the US. 

The purpose of this project is to employ a mixed method, community engaged “citizen science” approach to identify, contexualize, and map healthy lifestyle promoting assets and environments within racially and socioeconomically diverse neighborhoods in Atlanta and other communities across the United States. Additionally, key physical, built, and social environment hazards (e.g. broken sidewalks, dilapidated buildings, other neighborhood hazards) will be identified. A cohort of asset mapping “captains” are trained in community-based asset mapping and field data collection techniques, and then employed to mobilize local teams to map key wellness assets (e.g. commercial and community fitness spaces, parks and greenspaces, community gardens, fresh produce providers, community gardens, etc) and hazards.
