On Sunday, September 26, 2010, at 6:00 PM, my life changed forever. As I stood leaning against a building column, weeping intensely during a teaching on the Holy Spirit, a supernatural numbness gripped my body. Suddenly, a powerful electrical current shot from the top of my head straight to my feet, knocking me to the floor and shaking my entire being. In that moment, a quiet voice spoke directly to my mind, revealing deep truths, including the exact emotions of my little brother who stood beside me.
When the intensity subsided, I was left in a state of absolute wonder, anchored by a deep joy and unshakeable peace. Later that night, as I opened my Bible at home, the text came alive. It was no longer just words on a page; it felt as though the Scriptures were speaking to me directly, like a living person. In that moment, I realized something dormant within me had been supernaturally awakened—a divine capacity to decipher the language of another realm. This, I understood, was the true reality of being born again in the Spirit.
“5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”
John 3:5-7NKJV
Though Saul was physically alive—breathing threats and bringing havoc upon the early Church—he was spiritually dead. He ruthlessly hunted down and arrested men and women who dared to follow Jesus Christ (Acts 8:3), fueled by a furious energy to travel and persecute the disciples of the Lord. He executed this dark duty with relentless, living force. But right at the peak of his destructive crusade, a radical turning point altered his destiny forever.
“Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord? ”Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. [a]It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do? ”Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”7 And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. 8 Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.”
Acts 9:1-9NKJV
We learn a sobering lesson from Saul’s life: a man can be entirely active, driven by duty, and convinced he is on the right path—yet remain completely dead to the Living God. True life is not measured by outward actions, careers, or biological survival. Living is infinitely more than just being alive. To step into God’s true purpose and reality, a shift must occur from the inside out: one must be born again.
“And to the [a]angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.
Revelation 3:1 NKJV
"How can a person be dead if they are still alive?" You might ask this very question. To answer it, we must first look at death through a Biblical lens. The carnal world views death as a definitive end—the ultimate finish line. But in the Word of God, death never means cessation; death means separation.
The Scriptures speak of a "second death" in Revelation 2:11, 20:6, 20:14–15, and 21:8. This is the terrifying reality for anyone whose name is not found written in the Book of Life—they are cast into the lake of fire. Notice that the second death is not annihilation; it is a conscious, ongoing existence in a place of torment day and night, forever and ever. It is the final, ultimate separation: those excluded from the Book of Life are eternally severed from the presence of the Living God.
But what about the death we see every day? In Revelation 20:13, the word "death" is paired with Hades. The Greek word used here is Thanatos, which refers to physical death. When does physical death happen? It occurs the exact moment a person’s soul and spirit are separated from their physical body—when the silver cord linking the earthly tent to the eternal spirit is finally loosed.
Remember your Creator before the silver cord is [b]loosed, Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well.7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.
Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 NKJV
Until that silver cord is loosed, the spirit and soul can travel beyond the physical body and still return to it. We see glimpses of this supernatural reality throughout Scripture in the lives of Elijah, Elisha, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Daniel, John, and Enoch. Physical death only occurs when that separation becomes absolute and permanent. Until the final judgment, the souls of the unrighteous remain confined within Hades and Death.
Because physical death and the second death both represent a separation from two distinct realities, it brings us to a third type: spiritual death. This directly answers our introductory question: "How can a person be dead if they are still alive?" The answer is simple. A person can be fully active in the physical realm, yet completely lifeless in the spiritual realm—devoid of a living, activated spirit. Let me break this down further as we keep reading.
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify[a] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV
The spirit, soul, and body are the distinct components that make up a human being. From the very beginning, our merciful God created us completely whole, lacking absolutely nothing before sin entered our story. God’s original divine order for humanity was structured with precision: First: Spirit, Second: Soul, Third: Body.
The spiritual dimension of man originates from the literal breath of God, as revealed in Genesis 2:7. This is the spiritual antenna responsible for sensing the unseen realm. It is the exact part of our being designed to see, hear, feel, comprehend, and communicate with the living God. In short, our human spirit was designed to dwell in connection with the spiritual world—existing purely to anchor us to the invisible, eternal realm.
Tragically, when Adam and Eve sinned, that divine hierarchy was completely flipped. The order was inverted to put the body first, the soul second, and the absolute worst befell the spirit—it died. God did not lie when He warned them of the consequences of eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Gen. 2:17). At the Fall, a vital part of their humanity suffered immediate death. The most important piece of their identity was severed from them. The very spiritual garment they required to stand face-to-face with a holy God was gone. Their spiritual bodies, once clothed in divine glory, disintegrated, instantly exposing their nakedness (Gen. 3:7). Because their spiritual eyes were blinded to God's covered glory, their physical eyes suddenly took over, focusing only on their exposed flesh.
Without a living spirit, humanity lost its capacity to sustain immortal life. Cast out of the Garden of Eden, they were exiled into a broken world now bound to decay. Because of the curse of sin, every material thing is now marching toward physical expiration—even the earth itself. As descendants of Adam and Eve, you and I inherit this exact spiritual condition. Today, a woman still experiences the painful curse of childbearing, and a man must toil over a cursed ground to survive (Gen. 3:16–19). We walk through this dying world lacking our original spiritual covering. Apart from Christ, because of sin, we are born dead in the spirit.
In the past you were spiritually dead because of your disobedience and sins. 2 At that time you followed the world's evil way; you obeyed the ruler of the spiritual powers in space, the spirit who now controls the people who disobey God. 3 Actually all of us were like them and lived according to our natural desires, doing whatever suited the wishes of our own bodies and minds. In our natural condition we, like everyone else, were destined to suffer God's anger.
Ephesians 2:1-3 GNT
We may walk through this world convinced we are fully alive, but without the Spirit of God breathing inside us, we are functionally dead in the eyes of the Living God. Apart from Him, our spiritual senses are completely numb. We cannot decipher spiritual truths, nor can we comprehend the vast mysteries of who God is. We are entirely blind to His glory. A person can never truly experience a life-altering, divine encounter until their human spirit is supernaturally resurrected—a beautiful awakening that Jesus called being "Born of the Spirit."
Returning to the transformation of Saul—who would become the Apostle Paul—we find him blinded by the brilliant light of God on the road to Damascus. But a profound shift occurred when the disciple Ananias laid hands on him. Scripture records that something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and his sight was instantly restored (Acts 9:17–18).
What completely amazes me is that Paul did not merely regain his physical sight in that moment. His spiritual eyes were blasted wide open. Suddenly, he was able to peer deep into the spiritual realm, decoding the hidden mysteries of God. In his epistles, he wrote with supernatural authority about the secrets of the ancient past and the architecture of the prophetic future. What happened on that dusty road? His human spirit, once dead in trespasses, was supernaturally reborn. He was completely transformed from a ruthless persecutor of Christians into a powerhouse Apostle of Jesus Christ.
How did this happen? How was his dead spirit brought back to life? In one of his own letters, Paul pulls back the curtain and beautifully describes exactly how a person is made alive in the Spirit.
But God's mercy is so abundant, and his love for us is so great, 5 that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience he brought us to life with Christ. It is by God's grace that you have been saved. 6 In our union with Christ Jesus he raised us up with him to rule with him in the heavenly world. 7 He did this to demonstrate for all time to come the extraordinary greatness of his grace in the love he showed us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:4-7 GNT
How, then, can we be born again in the spirit? It happens exclusively through our divine union with the Lord Jesus Christ. Scripture reveals that God brought us to life together with Christ. The heavenly realm is no longer far from us; it is within our immediate reach the moment we align our lives with Jesus. Being born of the Spirit is not a secondary option—it is the essential first step into a true, divine encounter. Our union with Christ is the only entrance to the Kingdom of God.
Why did I choose to share this deep spiritual truth before diving into the story behind each song? Because every track on this debut album was born from our personal encounters with the Living God. The Holy Spirit directly inspired us to receive and write these songs as living testimonies of His reality. As you read the stories and messages behind each track—and see how God revealed Himself to us through His Word—our deepest prayer is that your human spirit will also be supernaturally revived.
As I mentioned at the very beginning of this chapter, the night I was born again, the Bible began to speak to me like a real person. In fact, one of the songs on this album was written in a completely supernatural way, entirely different from my usual songwriting process. That singular moment convinced me without a doubt that God was calling me into songwriting and music production. I will share those full, incredible details when we get to that song’s chapter. For now, before you turn the page, I humbly ask you to pray to the Living God. Ask Him for a continuous, divine encounter, so that you may know, serve, and love Him with everything you have.
Enjoy the journey as you discover the story behind each song.
