Above anything else I believe about students, I believe that every individual child in a classroom, when given the right resources, support, and encouragement, is capable of achieving great things. I believe that every student who walks through the doors of a classroom has the right to a safe, respectful, supportive, and encouraging environment, regardless of their background or learning ability. Every student has an inherent desire to learn, and I believe that as educators, it is our responsibility to nurture that desire and work alongside the students to provide them with the best possible resources to succeed.
Each of my students will have a unique background and perspective when they enter my class. The environment in which we grow up and develop during the fundamental early years of our lives has a drastic impact on how we are formed as individuals (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). I believe that, as their teacher, it is my responsibility to not only acknowledge that perspective but also to recognize and discuss how these perspectives may differ from my own. My classroom will be a space where every perspective is recognized as valid and valued. This means that student voices are always centered in my classroom when it comes to sharing thoughts and ideas. However, this does not mean that these thoughts and ideas will be accepted without question, but rather will set a precedent for open, honest, and respectful dialogue between students and myself. I believe that an effective classroom is one where the student feels comfortable and safe enough to share their thoughts and concerns with the teacher, knowing that they will be listened to, respected, and included in the decision-making process.
As a teacher, I am committed to helping my students be the best they can be in every aspect, even outside the content of my class. As a social studies teacher, I love what I teach and recognize the value of my subject in understanding our world. However, beyond my passion for history, I understand that student learning goes beyond the dates and events discussed in class. I believe in prioritizing students' needs over class content. This involves developing a relationship with each student to assess where they are and determine how we can work together to help them progress. I don’t believe in leaving any student behind, as we are only as strong as our weakest members. Creating a nurturing and inclusive classroom community is vital to this goal. It means fostering an environment where students are encouraged to lift each other up, support one another, and collaborate effectively. When challenges arise it is essential that we come together as a cohesive unit to address and correct our mistakes, learn from them, and continue moving forward. I strive to create a classroom environment that provides the necessary resources for all students to achieve optimal learning. It is essential to me that each student feels they are a welcomed part of our classroom community, regardless of their abilities. I want my students to feel celebrated for their differences and to recognize the unique strengths they bring to the class, in order to achieve this I aim to foster a classroom where every student feels empowered and motivated to contribute their best.
