Bio: I was born and raised in Baghdad. I studied Geology at the University of Baghdad, and after graduating with a B.S. I worked for Schlumberger in Moscow, Russia. I then went back to grad school and got a Ph.D. from Western Michigan. I was a postdoc for ~ 3 years at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts and for 1 year at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles before moving to Hawai'i in January 2026. I love science and I think the scientific method is the most insightful way to view the world. My lens of viewing the world is a geochemical one! Besides science, I enjoy swimming, hiking, and playing FIFA!

Bio: I was born and raised in South Dakota. I graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management before moving to Hawaiʻi in August 2026. At UH Mānoa, my research focuses on marine carbonates and their role in the oceanic carbon cycle. Though I'm more used to the cold winters and freshwater lakes of the Midwest, I'm excited to explore and study more of the islands and ocean around Hawaiʻi!

Bio: I was born in Washington and grew up in San Diego, California. I transferred to UH Manoa in Spring 2026 and I am studying Global Environmental Science and working towards a certificate in GIS. My research interests include geochemistry, climate change, and the ocean carbon cycle. I am passionate about environmentalism and conserving ecosystems and natural resources. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to pursue a PhD in oceanography and continue working toward a career where I can contribute to our understanding and protection of the natural world.

Bio: My name is Alex Ursel and I am from Alaska! I worked as a park ranger for several years before attending community college in Central Oregon, where I got an Associate of Science degree. I then transferred to UHM where I am in my senior year. I love paleo-ecology, sedimentology, and anything else relating to fossils. I love hiking, snorkelling, and especially fishing. Someday soon, I hope to apply what I've learned to helping my community back home.

Bio: I was born and raised in Ilocos Norte, Philippines. I'm a senior majoring in Earth Science and minoring in Atmospheric Sciences. My research interests include paleoclimate, low-temperature geochemistry, and hydro-meteorology. My research focuses on sediment cores collected in Kaneohe Bay to conduct paleoenvironmental reconstruction. After graduating, I hope to pursue a PhD degree in paleoclimatology.

I love wet food and catnip, and chlorine from swimming pools drives me crazy! I help the lab by volunteering my whiskers for particle picking under the microscope. I was told that my whiskers are much better than laboratory brushes, so you are welcome!
