Do you normally write by hand or type? Did you find this task difficult or easy? Explain.
I do a bit of both. I find organizing my do list and reminders is best with pen and post it notes. When I am taking notes in a meeting or from a video or article, I hand write. I think when it's just for myself, I am more likely to hand write. However, when writing for sharing with someone else - work document, course assignments, I would always type. I found the task fairly easy. I don't mind hand writing, and I'm not self-conscious about my hand writing style. However, I think that was because the of open reflection choice of topic. I really just wrote what popped into my head as I went and its very informal. If the assignment had required a more formal style, I would have struggled. As it was, I did make a web, which is something I never do in writing prep. However, without the ability to edit, I was little concerned about having more of a plan before starting. When I type for a formal piece, I often start in the middle with facts/opinions, and then go back and frame an intro and conclusion around that, and usually reorder things a few times. With hand writing, that is not easily done. So I did make a web to at least plan a bit. Had this been a formal piece that had to be typed, I would likely have had to make a full outline and work on separate sheets that could be moved around, and then rewrite a final draft. I also found it hard to approximate the 500 word target.
What did you do when you made a mistake or wanted to change your writing? How did you edit your work? Did your choice of media play a part in how you edited your work?
I just kept going. I didn't edit at all. I feel whatever mistakes might be there, it would still be clearer to read with them in than with a mess of scratches and edits.
What do you feel is the most significant difference between writing by hand and using mechanized forms of writing? Which do you prefer and why?
I don't write for pleasure. When I write, its because of a need or function. I like to handwrite my notes and lists so that I can visually stick them around - on my desk, my wall calendar, sides of my monitor, in books or on papers. Visually, it keeps me on track more so than if those were tucked away in a notes app, reminder app or phone calendar. Those would be out of sight, and not be that visual trigger for me. However, writing a paper or work document, is much preferred typed. Revisions are much easier when initially creating, but also as one continues to use the piece. Changing something up after you have used it. I can't imagine writing up a page of student notes, teaching the lesson, realizing I needed another example, and rewriting the notes to add one or two sentences, or to rephrase something. I don't even like to take resource from someone unless its in an editable format in the cloud. And then there are the helpers. Spell check. Grammar check. Quick key thesaurus. Word count. In the end, being able to type text is more important to me than hand write text.
