Session Description: As we reflect on the past, among the historical figures who have championed American civil rights and worked to create a more just and inclusive society are individuals with disabilities. Despite the importance of including the accomplishments of individuals with disabilities in the social studies curriculum, teachers cite time constraints, a lack of resources, and content area relevance as barriers (Hansen, Bialka, Wojcik, 2025). This session addresses these challenges by focusing on practical ways in which teachers can effectively integrate disability history and the social, political, and economic contributions of persons with disabilities into their curriculum. The presenters will empower teachers with lesson ideas and resources.
