My Teaching Philosophy
Being a teacher is something that I have dreamed of since my childhood. In my own education, the school setting was a place where I felt like I could be my true self and showcase all of my strengths academically, athletically, socially, and personally. I dedicate my success, my resilience, my confidence, and my ability to care to the teachers who formed me. If it was not for them, I would not be in this position today, and that feeling is exactly how I want my own students to feel.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student is capable of growth when they feel supported, valued, and understood in the classroom. I strive to create a classroom atmosphere that fosters positive student-teacher relationships that involve trust, empathy, and respect. I believe that when students feel safe in a classroom, their ability to take academic risks and grow intellectually, personally, and socially will rise. In addition to academic growth, I also strive to teach student skills such as resilience, responsibility, collaboration, and self-reflection. By setting clear expectations and modeling these behaviors, I am able to help students build habits that will benefit them outside of the classroom setting.
While building relationships with the students can ensure positive classroom management, I also recognize that every student enters a classroom with unique experiences, strengths, and challenges. Because of this, differentiated instruction is absolutely necessary in my classroom. My goal is to foster the learning needs of every student and to meet them where they are by providing varied instructional strategies and appropriate support. I work to ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students, whether through scaffolding, small group instruction, or choice-based assignments and assessments.
I also aim to develop self-sufficient learners by gradually shifting responsibility from teacher-directed instruction to student independence. I believe that when students have a voice in their own education and engage in hands-on activities, they become more confident and capable to think critically, problem solve, and take ownership in their learning. By creating a supportive and reflective classroom environment where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process, students are able to build resilience and perseverance in themselves. My goal is for my students to leave my classroom with the skills necessary to learn effectively on their own.
Beyond student relationships, I believe that fostering creativity is essential to helping students become more engaged, thoughtful, and innovative learners. In my classroom, I incorporate opportunities for creative expression through project-based learning that includes digital formats, writing, and design based assignments that allow students to explore and create content in several different ways. I have designed an assignment that allows the students to create their own websites that showcases the assignments they have done in class, as well as their life and personality outside of the school setting. I believe that fostering creativity encourages students to view multiple perspectives and value original thinking.
Ultimately my goal as an educator is to create a classroom where all students are able to grow not just academically, but within themselves as well. I strive to create a space where the students not only learn necessary content knowledge, but also develop the confidence and skills necessary beyond school.
