Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1. How and when can I contact you?

  • You can email me anytime at katherin.terry@smail.astate.edu. I check my email before and after school. If you would like, you can email me to schedule a phone/in-person meeting. If you have an urgent question, text me at 314-719-9062 and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Question 2. What do I do if my child is having trouble with their homework?

  • If you are unable to help them with their assignment, I can send out an email with more detailed instructions and an example problem. Homework pages will be given out at the beginning of the week and due on Friday, so they can ask for help in class if they do not understand.

Question 3. How can I be more involved in my child's learning?

  • If you have the time, I would suggest reading with your child whenever possible. Reading aloud and asking them to read aloud is very beneficial for learning. I will send home spelling words that you can help them practice. You are also welcome to use any of the educational websites I have added to give your student practice at home.

Question 4. What is your class management style/how do you handle consequences?

  • I have implemented a 3 reminder punishment system. If they are not following the rules, they get a reminder. After 3, they are given a write-up. They do have the opportunity to take away a reminder throughout the day by showing good behavior. Three write-ups in one semester will require a parent-teacher meeting. The class will also have running class points that they can lose and gain based on behavior.

Question 5. Do you allow students to pick their own seats?

  • At the beginning of the semester, students can pick their seats. I will move them around every 4 weeks so they can have the opportunity to work with different students. I will be sure to accommodate if they need a specific seat/location.

Question 6. Do you allow students to snack throughout the day?

  • Since lunch is early, I give my students 10 minutes during reading time to have a snack. I will have snacks in my closet but that is only to be used for emergencies.

Question 7. How do you handle tardiness/absences?

  • I have a folder in my classroom that has any work that a student misses. When they come back to class, I will give them a packet of what they need to complete and a due date. Consequences for tardiness and absences are up to the school.

Question 8. How can I find out how my child is doing in class?

  • We will send out a progress report halfway through the semester and at the end of the semester. You can also keep track of your student's AR points to see their progress in reading. Any other questions about their progress you can email me.

Question 9. What is your opinion on assigning homework?

  • Your students will have to keep a reading log of their reading at home. They will have to read 10 minutes a night and get a parent's signature at the end of the week. They will also have 1-2 worksheets each week, but some of them can be completed in class.

Question 10. How can I stay up to date on class and school information/events?

  • I have a Remind 101 where I post updates about everything going on in our class and at Springhill Elementary. You will also need to check your child's folder when they get home on the side labeled "Take Home" because there will be important information and possibly papers that need to be signed.
