Using AI generated text is strictly prohibited. The use of AI tools like Grammarly and Spell-Check is allowed when the teacher has given permission.
The use of AI to complete homework or projects is not allowed and will result in a 0 on that assignment and further inspection of future assignments.
Our class has signed a contract that we wrote together stating they will not use AI to complete their work. They will be held to this standard.
Discussion Board:
Students and teachers are being taught how to use AI properly. The teachers are being put through classes to explain how to use AI the correct way through spell-check tools like Grammarly. They are supporting the use of this in parents emails to explain how sentences could be worded better so a parent does not get the wrong tone or memo when it comes to contacting them about school-related issues. This benefits classrooms because it helps children in older grades with their grammar on papers and essays. But, the downside of it is when students use these tools to correct their grammar and wording every single time they do not learn. They rely on a tool instead of learning how they need to fix their issues without taking it through a grammar checker. I think the ethical concerns are students using AI to create an essay for them or find short answer questions instead of doing the work themselves. This hinders their education and I can be a huge problem when grading papers without knowing if something is AI or if it is an actual student writing it. I feel like AI will only grow over time but I also feel like the restrictions with AI will increase as well. If spell checkers become a dependent for students in the classroom some schools or teacher may take it away altogether so they do not become so dependent on it. This will become a struggle especially when children are allowed to work on papers at home and the teacher does not know what they are doing while they are working. Overall, I feel like AI can be beneficial but you have to be careful with the restrictions you place on students and how you handle AI tools in the classroom.
