Welcome to my research and publications section, the home of my academic and scholarly work. In this section, I have provided a showcase of my academic research in addition to some publications. My academic interests vary to a degree but every article, essay, and book is related to the field of English or grounded within education.
To complete the last requirement for my M.A. I wrote my dissertation on Irish short stories. Specifically, the depictions of masculinity during the period after the founding of the Republic of Ireland. This dissertation connects the work of Frank O'Connor's "Guests of the Nation" to several of Brendan Behan's works. This paper was broken up into three chapters that illustrate the book history aspects of the era, then zoom in specifically on Frank O'Connor's work and the traditional literary criticism of the story, and lastly, it displays the similarity and connections between O'Connor and Behan.
This paper explores William Butler Yeats's artistic publication's as the editor of Elizabeth Yeats's printing company: The Cuala Press. During his tenure in this position W.B. Yeats made attempts to create an artistic press that harkened back to the aesthetic practices of the 17th Century and prior. This paper explores his decisions and the underlying evidence of such decisions.
During my senior year at Susquehanna University, I was able to conduct an independent study supervised by a professor in the English department, this study focused heavily on Benjamin Franklin and his efforts to establish a free and open press within colonial America. In this essay, I worked to address the theories and criticism raised by other scholars, primarily Jefferey A. Smith, Robert Martin, and Leonard Levy. During this research, I sought to conflate these scholarly resources against the primary resources written by Franklin himself. This essay seeks to address the historical misconceptions taught throughout American public schools for a more nuanced and realistic view of Franklin as a publisher.
Within human history, few things have stayed with humanity as long and as closely as the book. Book history is a field of study that is critical to understanding humanity's evolution and our relationship with narrative. My personal research interests reside in book history, and during my senior year of undergraduate, I was able to take a course on the history of the book. Attached here is my final paper for this course on the implementation of peer-to-peer review and how it could help to change the publishing industry for the better, rather than the restrictive nature of the peer-review process.
During my education capstone, I conducted a research study on the use of Gamification and Learning Management Systems (LMS) in the classroom. This paired with my student teaching experience, meaning I was able to conduct this research as well as design the course to complement Gamification. This paper seeks to show the positive and negative attributes of gamification within the classroom in addition to how gamification impacts student motivation. The research conducted in this paper was designed and actualized by myself in combination with my students.
Aesthetics of Ireland is my current project and is projected to be finished in the winter of 2025. Aesthetics of Ireland is a photographic book where the photographs are paired with poems inspired by the very photograph they are paired with. This book contains a mix of black and white and color images taken primarily in Dublin Ireland in addition to the Cliffs of Moher and Galway Ireland in January of 2022. This photography book is meant to showcase my experience in Ireland and characterize my experiences and emotions through film photography and poetry. Aesthetics of Ireland is my first major publication and my first published book. The poetry inside of this book focuses on love, loss, and rebirth above all else, and when combined with images it allows the mind of the reader to wander throughout the image while pushing the emotion through them.
