Greetings, students and families! My name is Mr. Williams, and I am the fifth grade writing teacher. I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in journalism, and I hold a master's degree in elementary education. I have been teaching at White Station Elementary since 2018 and have taught fifth grade ever year except for my first year. One of my favorite things about teaching at WSE is the diversity of our students. I have proudly taught students from Venezuela, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Lithuania, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Senegal, Israel, Iraq, and I'm sure many others. I have learned so much from my students. Furthermore, fifth grade is without a doubt my favorite grade to teach. Students are now learning how to be more responsible and independent, and I enjoy helping to facilitate and guide students through this "growing up" phase before they head off to middle school. I genuinely love what I do, and I look forward to the start of each new school day.
I'm a big music nerd with a large record collection. I've been collecting since I was a kid when I inherited some vinyl from my father. Although my collection spans many genres, my favorite genres are 80s/90s alternative rock, jazz, classical, and 80s/90s hip-hop. My favorite band of all time is Dinosaur Jr. Other favorites include Sonic Youth, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Hüsker Dü, Snarky Puppy, and Kamasi Washington. When I'm at home, I always have a record spinning.
SPORTS
Like many, I cannot resist the pull of sports. My two favorites are basketball and soccer. I follow the NBA pretty closely, with the Memphis Grizzlies being my favorite team. I try to go to as many games as I can, and sometimes I take my mom with me -- she's a big Grizzlies fan, too. Jaren Jackson Jr. is her favorite player. Although I'm not the best basketball player, I grew up playing soccer. Even though my competitive playing days are over, I created the school's first team and still coach it to this day. I think sports are great for students because of the unique ways it can teach lessons on dedication, responsibility, leadership, and accountability.
