6th Grade English Language Arts Standards
Welcome to 6th Grade ELA with Mr. Williams
In 6th Grade English Language Arts, students build strong reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills that prepare them for middle school success and beyond. Our class focuses on critical thinking, communication, and creativity through engaging literature and real-world writing.
What Students Will Learn
π Reading Literature
Students will:
Read novels, short stories, myths, and poetry
Identify themes and central ideas
Analyze characters, setting, and plot
Use evidence from the text to support answers
Compare different texts and genres
π° Reading Informational Text
Students will:
Read articles, biographies, and historical texts
Determine main idea and supporting details
Analyze text structure
Evaluate claims and evidence
Compare information from multiple sources

Students will write in three main styles:
Narrative Writing β personal stories and creative writing
Informative Writing β essays, reports, and explanations
Argumentative Writing β opinion writing with evidence
Students will also revise, edit, and publish writing using technology.

Students will:
Participate in classroom discussions
Present projects and speeches
Listen actively and respond respectfully
Work collaboratively with peers

Students will:
Improve grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure
Expand vocabulary using Greek and Latin roots
Use academic language in speaking and writing
