Call for Faculty Project Proposals: The next round of project proposals for the RAC of MRU is now open for submission
MRU Kozhikode is the central research lab of Govt Medical College, Kozhikode. The lab is open to collaborative research with other centers in Kerala and elsewhere in India in any area of Non communicable diseases.
Research/activities of MRU is monitored by
Research Advisory Committee: A Research Advisory Committee (RAC) envisaged giving direction to all future research projects taken up in the institution by individual departments as well as by the MRU. RAC has been constituted according to the guidelines (revised in 2016) of DHR and it conducts meetings once every six months. Till now several meetings were organized and more than 60 research proposals were presented. Many of the concept proposals from this were developed into full projects and out of which several full projects received extramural grant from Government funding agencies such as SERB, DBT, ICMR (Govt of India), SBMR (Govt of Kerala) and FPID, WFP etc (International).
Program Implementation Committee: A Program Implementation Committee (PIC) has been set up to monitor the overall functioning of MRU, mainly the administrative affairs. The committee discusses the progress/ directions once every three months.
Service provided
Biobanking facility including cryostorage of clinical samples is provided at MRU for conducting research from faculties of various departments as well as PG student’s thesis works from Govt Medical College, Kozhikode.
Research support for the Post Graduate students.
Priming of Faculties/students of Medical College: Brainstorming sessions were conducted to identify the thrust area and attract medical faculties to initiate research projects and working groups from different departments were formulated for doing active research in these areas.
Regular Hands-on training programs for final year Bsc-MLT students: Four day routine training on techniques of molecular biology for final year Bsc-MLT students.
Support for Research Projects of Medical College: MRU is the central research facility of Govt Medical College, Kozhikode, providing both scientific and technical support for research related activities of the institute.
As the central research facility of Govt Medical College, MRU provides technical as well as scientific support for thesis works of students at GMC.
Training programs conducted by MRU: Faculties/students were trained in molecular biology methods (with special focus on medical research/ diagnostics).
An advanced Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory (MDL) in Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode, a project by MRU was approved by Government of Kerala. By Setting up MDL here it will establish the feasibility of the idea and help to start off the modernization of the diagnostic facilities in the Public sector. The objectives of the project are
To provide reliable molecular based tests at cheap rates for patients attending the public sector hospitals in Kerala
To train personnel in diagnostic molecular biology so that such facilities can be replicated elsewhere in the state
To work in close collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) so the research techniques developed at MRU can be translated into Clinical diagnostics.
