All was well and fine in Union City on June 12th of 1984. All was well.
Until they arrived and started attacking Hawaii.
"Soon, you'll be face to face with whatever saw fit to let you exist in the universe and you'll have to justify the space you've filled."
That was the last thing the unknown flier said before losing connection to the Elite Ace squadron and blowing up the mothership over the Pacific. Bold words from a man that was essentially a ghost.
Terra may have given you guys the basic setup for how this attack played out, but I'm here to explain a little bit more. My name is Lieutenant Presley (Phoenix) Colton, I'm a survivor of the June 12th alien attack over California in 1984.
I was a Sergeant in 1984, I was moved to the Elite Ace after passing a certification exam the year prior. The Elite Ace were the top dogs of the air force, everyone looked up to us because we were the best in the world. I was flying over California and Alaska to check the air space between Russia and America. Russia was still a huge threat at this time, and we needed to keep up in the game if we wanted to stop them from an attack.
We first got the news of an unidentified flying object (U.F.O.) centered over the Hawaiian islands from our naval base out there. We thought it was the Воздушно-космические силы (Russian Aerospace Forces), but then about twenty minutes later we got conflicting reports from the Soviets that they were being attacked by the Americans. Then the Japanese were reporting the same ships.
We knew something was fishy when the Koreans and Chinese started blaming each other for these same attacks, but then Vancouver told us to prepare for Russians inbound because they were being attacked on their west coast. Every Pacific coast nation was lighting up and blaming each other, we needed confirmation. The Soviets were damn near ready to nuke us until they shot one down and found no signs of America on the side of the ship.
This was something else entirely. But we had no time to hang around we needed to get our guys in the air and ready to shoot something down. The U.S.S. Union sent a distress signal from coordinates between Hawaii and Los Angeles, which was bad news because that was our only carrier in the Pacific.
Then we saw the swarm of planes fly over Union City. Our guys were still going through flight check when they started shooting down on the city. Explosions all around us, you'd think you were back in Vietnam. These ships looked nothing like anything that any nation had in their arsenal.
The Sacramento division had to get called in because the division in Union City wasn't going to cut it. Even with the Union, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento divisions in the air, we were still gonna be outnumbered 50 to 1. Each flyer was instructed to take down at least 50 ships before restocking on fuel and ammo. This was a high priority.
I was walking on the side deck of the ship when the first wave of aliens flew over the city. A laser shot went right over my head and left a gaping hole in the side of the ship. I got back up and I could see through to the other side of the ship through the mess hall. I rushed up to the flight deck and got my orders.
The carrier ship from which I was launched got destroyed shortly after I took off, there were still five hundred people on it when it blew up and sunk. As soon as I got in the air these little bastards were swarming over the entire state. Our goal was to stop these things from going inland, keep them in the Pacific.
My partner in crime was Sergeant Kem Nightingale, he was a nice fella who loved to shoot things. He wasn't good at holding his own gun so they put him in a plane instead. Kem and I thought shooting down the ships was the fun part of the whole ordeal.
Kem got his fifty kills and had to return to base to get more fuel. While I was over the city still shooting these bastards down. But while I was flying over an apartment building I saw someone painted a message that said "Kill'em" with an alien face crossed out with red paint. It was encouraging to see people brave being outside to paint a message for our boys in the skies.
Everyone may think the unknown flier stopped the alien attack in its tracks, but it took well over four hours to clear out the rest of the ships in the skies after he reportedly went missing. He gets credit for something that was exaggerated in the books. And everyone thinks he's entirely unknown, not really. Everyone called him Harplie in basic, but no one really knew what his real name is.
Kem was flying back to base for the second time when he got a ship on his tail. I had to go find him so I can clear it away from him but it was too late. Kem died in the explosion of his plane crashing over the Sierra Nevada mountains. I cleared out the last ship that was on him and went back home knowing I could've saved my friend.
More than fifty thousand lives were lost on June 12th, but Harplie and Kem will forever remain with us as the heroes that saved California in 1984. Rest in peace everyone.
You'd think the alien attacks would help us prepare for them to come again, but it was really a power grab. After the Soviet Union fell there was a power void in Europe, that's how the German Union formed. The Germans went on to create the Unified World Order, and they had all of the Alaegium from the aliens that they needed to build their powerful military they used to destroy the world.
