We are currently working on Unit 1: Adding, Subtracting, and Working with Data
⭐ Have a test coming up? Look for the current unit below for practice and family resources.
🏠 Helping at home? Just 5–10 minutes of relaxed practice is plenty!
💡 Not sure how we teach something? Visit the Amplify Parent & Caregiver Resource Hub to see the strategies and vocabulary we use at school.
Unit 2: Addition and Subtraction Story Problems
Right now, you can help your child by practicing:
📖 Make Sense of the Story: Before solving, talk about what is happening in the problem.
Try this: Ask, “What do we know? What are we trying to find out?”
➕➖ Add or Subtract? Help your child decide whether quantities are being put together, added to, taken apart, compared, or taken away.
Try this: Ask, “Do you think we should add or subtract? How do you know?”
🧩 Find the Missing Part: The unknown or missing number will not always be at the end of the problem!
Try this: “You had 5 apples. Someone gave you some more. Now you have 8. How many apples did you get?”
✏️ Show Your Thinking: Encourage your child to use pictures, objects, fingers, number sentences, or another strategy to represent the story.
Try this: Ask, “Can you show me what is happening in the story?”
📊 Compare Amounts: We will also use data and story problems to determine how many more or how many fewer.
Try this: Make two groups of toys or snacks and ask, “How many more are in this group?”
💡 Parent Tip: The goal isn't just getting the correct answer. We want students to understand what is happening in the story and explain why their strategy makes sense.
💡 Parent Tip: If your child makes a mistake, try asking them to explain their thinking before telling them the answer. Sometimes hearing themselves explain it helps them spot the mistake!
❤️ One More Thing: Please don’t worry if your child solves a problem differently than you would! There are often several ways to solve a math problem. Ask them to show you their thinking and explain how they got their answer.
Not sure what to ask while helping with math? Try these:
💭 “What is happening in the problem?”
🤔 “How did you figure that out?”
🔎 “Can you prove it?”
You don’t have to know exactly how we teach it at school! Asking questions and letting your child explain their thinking is one of the best ways you can help. ❤️
