To celebrate Native American Heritage Month, students across the grades engaged in enriching, age-appropriate activities that combined literature, art, and history.

 Kindergarten and 1st Grade: The Raven Trickster

• Reading: Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade read the book "Raven: Trickster from the Pacific Northwest." This introduced them to a significant figure and storytelling tradition from the region.

• Art Project: Inspired by the story, the students created their own construction paper ravens. They were encouraged to personalize their creations, allowing for individual artistic expression.

2nd and 3rd Grade: Powwow Patterns

• Reading & Discussion: 2nd and 3rd graders read the book "A Powwow Day." Following the reading, they held a discussion focused on Native American blankets and the meaning and beauty of their traditional patterns.

• Art Project: To apply what they learned, students used construction paper to create their own "blankets" with patterns. This activity helped them understand the importance of geometric design and symbolism in Native American art.

4th and 5th Grade: History and Art of Oscar Howe

• History Lesson: 4th and 5th grade students learned about the history of the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota, and the significant artwork created there by Yankton Dakota artist Oscar Howe.

• Art Project: Inspired by the vibrant style and technique of Howe's famous paintings, the students created their own projects. They used tissue paper to resemble the unique, textural quality of the artwork displayed on the Corn Palace.

These activities provided a hands-on opportunity for students to learn about and appreciate the diverse cultures, art, and traditions of Native Americans.
