In our art classroom, we believe that art is a powerful language that transcends barriers. We strive to create a safe, inclusive space where every student sees themselves reflected in our curriculum and learns to appreciate the diverse experiences of others.
This month, we are focusing on the work of Nancy Rourke, a renowned Deaf painter and activist. Her work introduces our students to De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art), an art genre that explores the Deaf experience, celebrates American Sign Language (ASL), and addresses issues of social justice and identity.
You may notice that many of Nancy Rourke’s paintings are instantly recognizable by their bold use of only three colors: Yellow, Red, and Blue.
Yellow: Often represents enlightenment, clarity, and the "light" of communication.
Red: Represents empowerment, resistance, and the strength of the Deaf community.
Blue: Symbolizes the "blue" of Deaf pride, reflecting the deep history and cultural bond of the community.
By limiting her palette to these primary colors, Rourke draws the viewer’s focus directly to the subjects—hands, eyes, and mouths—highlighting the beauty and necessity of non-verbal communication.
Our goal is to show students that their unique identities are not only accepted but celebrated. By studying artists like Nancy Rourke, we teach students that:
Diversity is a strength: Different perspectives make our art (and our community) richer.
Art is communication: When words are not enough, art gives us the tools to express our truth.
Advocacy matters: Art can be a tool to stand up for ourselves and others.
