Why We Study Nancy Rourke

This month, we are focusing on the work of Nancy Rourke, a renowned Deaf painter and activist. Her work introduces our students to De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art), an art genre that explores the Deaf experience, celebrates American Sign Language (ASL), and addresses issues of social justice and identity.

The Power of Three: Understanding Her Palette

You may notice that many of Nancy Rourke’s paintings are instantly recognizable by their bold use of only three colors: Yellow, Red, and Blue.

• Yellow: Often represents enlightenment, clarity, and the "light" of communication.

• Red: Represents empowerment, resistance, and the strength of the Deaf community.

• Blue: Symbolizes the "blue" of Deaf pride, reflecting the deep history and cultural bond of the community.

By limiting her palette to these primary colors, Rourke draws the viewer’s focus directly to the subjects—hands, eyes, and mouths—highlighting the beauty and necessity of non-verbal communication.
