This semester, 6th and 7th graders have been diving into the bold, energetic world of legendary artist Keith Haring.
By exploring his life and legacy, students discovered that Haring was driven by a passion for making art accessible to everyone—famously creating "Subway Drawings" for commuters and donating the majority of his earnings to social causes and children’s charities.
Inspired by his "art for all" philosophy and iconic linear style, our students took his signature aesthetic and gave it a deeply personal twist:
Using Haring’s thick outlines and vibrant color palette, 6th graders designed unique collages. Each piece features 12 distinct symbols or figures that represent their personal history, values, and favorite things, blending graphic design with self-portraiture.
7th graders took inspiration from Haring’s famous "all-over" compositions. They created intricate "infinite doodles"—dense, flowing patterns that illustrate the many layers of who they are. From favorite meals and hobbies to the friends and family who support them, these pieces capture the beautiful complexity of their lives in one continuous visual narrative.
