Our K–6th grade artists kicked off the school year celebrating International Dot Day, using creativity and courage to make their mark!
This year, our students explored the life and abstract art of American artist Howardena Pindell, learning how art can transform personal experiences into powerful expression:
Grades K–2: Our youngest artists paired Pindell's artwork with Peter H. Reynolds' book The Dot, focusing on self-expression and starting with just a simple mark. They then created their own watercolor space and galaxy paintings inspired by Pindell’s colorful, circle-filled cosmos.
Grades 3–6: Students discussed Pindell’s childhood memory of being served from a red-dotted cup during the era of segregation—a key moment that inspired her lifelong fascination with circles. We explored how she transformed a symbol of exclusion into vibrant, positive statements using layered paper dots, texture, and color.
