Our K-5 artists took a journey to Colombia to explore the colorful, oversized world of renowned artist Fernando Botero!
We learned about his signature style, "Boterismo"—where figures and objects are painted with exaggerated volume, smooth rounded shapes, and playful scale to make them feel prominent, lively, and full of character.
What We Did:
Visual Thinking & Storytelling: Students did an amazing job during our Visual Thinking Strategies discussion! Their imaginations truly shone as they looked at Botero's art pieces—it was so much fun hearing the creative stories and vibrant adventures they made up for each character.
Cultural Connection: We discussed how Latin American artists like Botero use art to share cultural stories, traditions, and humor.
Hands-On Boterismo Self-Portraits: Students drew their own self-portraits! Using geometric guidelines and clever "volume tricks".
Art Vocabulary: We practiced using art terms like volume, shape, proportion, portrait, and background to share and present our finished artwork.
