Exploring South African Heritage & Dr. Esther Mahlangu!

Our young artists across all grade levels are diving into the vibrant world of world-renowned South African Ndebele artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu! Here is a peek at what each grade level is working on in the studio:

Kindergarten: Painting Like a Printmaker

Our youngest artists are discovering how Dr. Mahlangu uses bold black lines and bright geometric shapes in her traditional wall paintings.

Hands-on Skills: Students are learning proper brush care (swirling gently, no "smooshing" bristles!) and using tempera cakes to paint bold, controlled geometric patterns like triangles, squares, and straight lines.

1st Grade: Geometric Mosaic Puzzles

First graders are exploring Ndebele house paintings and traditional patterns while developing fine motor and spatial reasoning skills.

Hands-on Skills: Instead of paint, students are practicing scissor safety and precision gluing ("dot, dot, not a lot!") to cut out pre-printed shapes and fit them together into balanced, tessellated patterns on a grid.

2nd & 3rd Grade: Memory & Geometry Mosaics

Older elementary artists are examining how Dr. Mahlangu uses traditional art to preserve culture and share personal stories.

Hands-on Skills: Students are using real drafting tools (rulers and T-squares) to construct precise, complex geometric frames. Inside, they are translating a cherished childhood memory into stylized graphic symbols and intentional color schemes.

4th & 5th Grade: Traditional Ndebele Dolls

In honor of South African Heritage Month, upper elementary students are following a guided drawing step-by-step to create iconic Ndebele dolls.

Hands-on Skills: Students are designing symmetrical clothing using varied line styles (zigzag, wavy, parallel, and diagonal) before bringing their dolls to life with bright watercolor paints and resist techniques.
