In honor of Black History Month, our 6th graders studied the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech. Inspired by these lessons, they created original art pieces depicting their personal vision of a world with true equality among all cultures and races. We are incredibly proud of the meaningful work they produced.

My artwork is titled Road to Freedom, and it focuses on the dream Martin Luther King Jr. shared in his “I Have a Dream” speech. I included a podium to represent Dr. King speaking up for civil rights and taking a stand for equality. This connects to the Civil Rights Movement because his speech inspired people to work toward equal rights. I printed a picture of Dr. King and traced it onto a large paper. Then I painted the corners with watercolor for color, spray painted the background for a space-like effect, and used tempera sticks to outline and color him.

My artwork is titled Equality, and it focuses on Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight for equality during the Civil Rights Movement. When he was younger, he learned about segregation when a friend was no longer allowed to play with him because of his skin color. As an adult, he wanted everyone to be treated equally, so he gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech and inspired many people to fight racism and segregation. In my artwork, the colored words represent the ideas Dr. King was fighting for, and the white words represent the things he was fighting against. I used tempera paint for the background and tempera sticks to write and color the positive words so they would stand out.

My artwork is titled Free to Fly. It shows a butterfly that was once controlled but becomes free when the chains break. I used the butterfly to represent Dr. King’s dream because butterflies are free and able to choose where they go. This connects to the Civil Rights Movement because many people wanted freedom and the right to control their own lives. I used acrylic paint so the colors would be loud and bright, showing how the butterfly becomes colorful when it finally breaks free.

My artwork is titled Beacon of Hope, and it focuses on Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the unfair treatment of Black communities. I chose to draw a portrait of Dr. King and added parts of his speech to the back of the artwork. I used different levels of pencil shading because the darker tones represent the difficult times during segregation, while the lighter areas represent hope for change. This connects to the Civil Rights Movement because many people were judged by their skin color instead of their character and wanted equal rights.

My artwork is titled Free Voting, and it focuses on the importance of voting rights that Dr. King spoke about in his speech. I included a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. that said people could not be satisfied while Black Americans were denied the right to vote. I drew a map of Alabama and New York with a Black voter and a white voter to show how voting rights were unequal in different places, which connects to the Civil Rights Movement because many Black Americans were prevented from voting due to racism. I used pencil to draw the map and coffee and watercolor to add color because the muted tones help show the seriousness of the struggle for voting rights.

My artwork shows the idea that people are the same no matter the color of their skin. I tried to make the characters look similar because I wanted to show that everyone should be treated equally. This connects to the Civil Rights Movement because Martin Luther King Jr. talked about how children should be able to play together whether they are Black or white. I used mostly markers for the colors and a little white paint to clean up the edges. I tried to make the colors and clothing styles look similar to help show the message of equality.

My artwork focuses on the idea of equal rights. I included the quote Equal Rights to show that people of all races should be treated the same. I used different colored dots, both dark and light, to represent people of different races coming together. Some of the dots are crowded together and some are more spread out to show how people used to feel about Black Americans compared to how things are today. I used Do-A-Dot markers to make the dots because they helped create the pattern that shows my idea about equality.

This connects to the Civil Rights Movement because Dr. King believed people of different races should live together in peace. I used many different colored pencils to show how different colors can mix together to make something beautiful. I also added blood red to represent the violence and suffering caused by racism.

My project is about the quote “I Have a Dream.” The man who made that quote was Martin Luther King Jr. For the art project I used colored pencils to make it. Its so important because making these projects is a way of showing how we can appreciate black history month in our own way. Also, how much we care about how they all the challenges those people had to go through just so that we could be here today. This connects to the Civil Rights Movement because it helps show that we care about others commitments and actions towards others.
