Our youngest learners in Kindergarten through 2nd grade took a fascinating trip to Ancient Egypt! They learned about history, the process of mummification, and the cultural significance of mummies.
To bring history to life, students created their own "mummy" paintings. In a fun and creative experiment, they used coffee as a natural pigment to achieve that wonderful, aged, linen-wrapped look. This was a fantastic way for them to discover that we can use natural materials to create beautiful art, connecting science, history, and creativity!
Students in 2nd and 3th grade explored the historical context of witches. This exploration moved beyond simple costumes to discuss the origins of the myths and stories.
Following their discussion, they engaged in a fun, expressive witch painting activity. This project was a focused exercise in practicing two key elements of art: line and color. Students used bold lines and expressive colors to give their witch portraits personality and mood.
Our 4th and 5th graders tackled a classic piece of literature with a meaningful discussion: the story of Frankenstein.
The central question was: "Who is the true monster of the story?" Students analyzed the narrative to discuss themes of humanity, rejection, and empathy. The conversation focused on the idea that we are all born kind, and the choices we make—and the way we treat others—is what ultimately determines our character. It's a reminder that while the holiday is fun, we have the power every day to decide whether to be good or mean, and that kindness is always the greatest strength.
To conclude this project, students used construction paper to create their own vibrant and expressive Frankenstein monster collages, giving a visual form to the complex character they analyzed.
