Equations & Inequalities
Computer Programing: Algebraic Expressions are needed in computer apps which are written to process real world situations. Computers use variables and mathematical symbols in the Algorithms of their programs, rather than full word English sentences.
Speed Limits Signs: Speed limits use inequalities to give maximum speeds vehicles can go on that particular road, sometimes they also have minimums.
Credit Card Companies: Credit cards use inequalities to determine how much is due that month.
Businesses: Businesses use inequalities to control inventory, plan production lines, produce pricing models, and for shipping/warehousing goods and materials. These methods allow one to maximize profit or minimize cost subject to a wide variety of constraints.
Police Officers: The absolute value is used in the real world to define the difference or change from one point to another. A good example I found was that if the everybody is going 55 mph and you are going 70 or 40 mph you will most likely get a ticket.
Geophysicist: A geophysicist uses absolute value to look at the total amount of energy used. In an energy wave, there are both negative and positive directions of movement.
Scuba Divers: Another example of absolute value is when scuba divers discuss their location in regards to sea level. “50 feet below sea level” doesn’t have to be represented as -50 feet.
