Morning meeting is the first thing we do each day as a class. This time builds a sense of community and promotes confidence in sharing and listening. First graders are practicing skills that we will build upon all year long. We will go over our schedule and learning objectives and review the calendar, including month, day, and year. We also write the date both expanded and digital. First graders will also talk about days of the week, count how many days we are in school, and much more! Once kiddos get comfortable with the routine of morning meeting, I will choose leaders to help guide us through!
WE HAVE FUN WITH PHONICS! The first thing we do to start off our phonics block is our Alphabet Chant and Hunks and Chunks. These are chants that help us to remember the letter and letter sounds as well as dipthongs, vowel teams and other digraphs that we commonly see while reading (check out the videos on the learning resources page). We then begin with a systematic and structured approach to learning phonics skills. We will learn phonics skills through a multisensory approach giving all learners the ability to process and store these skills in their long term memory. Phonics is a foundational skill that help kiddos decode unknown words. We are also using a new program this year called Amplify CKLA, which will solidify each student's foundational skills as well as developing skills along the way!
We will use this time to dedicate to our Social Sciences topics through creative writing, project based learning, experimentation and observation!
Kiddos will eat in the cafeteria and then go outside for recess!
Daily 5 is our ELA block. Before actually getting to Daily 5, we warm up with our whole group lesson on our focus skill of the week (Skills strand of CKLA). This often times includes a read aloud where I am reading as well as the children in the classroom! We then move into The Daily 5. This is a literacy framework used to foster independence and choice while building upon reading skills, writing skills, and word work skills. While students are moving through the 5 rounds, I am holding small group reading at my kidney table. These groups are differentiated based on diagnostic assessment results to meet students exactly where they need instruction.
Kiddos will rotate specials each day. Our special classes are; gym, music, art, stem, technology, and library.
Math starts off with a whole group lesson. W then move into math rounds.
During math rounds, students will rotate through 4 hands-on centers.
The centers are:
Math Game: Students will play a math game with a partner that focuses on the skill of the day.
At My Desk: Students will complete an activity that I check for understanding daily.
Teacher Group: Students meet with me to get a differentiated math lesson that is centered around the math focus of the day.
Hand on Tech: Students will get on their Chromebooks to access an extension activity through one of our math apps!
During this time, students will move through different themes throughout the year to build their listening comprehension skills as well as writing, and problem solving skills. Through these units, students will work together to use and apply core vocabulary, gain comprehension strategies and engage in creative writing.
Kiddos will clean up their areas and get ready for dismissal! They will check their mailboxes and bring home any completed work in their yellow folders.
