ELA Overview 

Read Aloud is the first component. The teacher reads high-quality literature, and the children are taught the new Common Core standards through rich conversations and analysis of the author’s craft.

Shared Reading helps children decode and understand grade-level text with the support of the teacher in a whole group setting. There may also be a Word Study/Language Arts piece that aligns with the Common Core standards

Reading: Children are not memorizing stories; they are using reading strategies on a new piece of text every time they read. Building on previous years of reading standards, students will learn and grow to become the best readers they can be. 

Reading Progress is monitored through comprehension questions that go beyond literal meaning of the story. The child’s reading behaviors are also monitored through recording what the child is reading (Reading Records) and analyzing what he/she needs to become a better reader.

Independent Reading is also a critical piece of reading. Your child will learn to read different genre, track their reading (in upper grades) and write about what they have read. This is also an important part of the new standards for reading in Ohio. 

My View/ SAAVAS is a district initiative reading program implemented last year and will continue this year. Based on the Science of Reading, My View will be used to complement the Ohio Content Standards to guide instruction in the classroom. I use the text to supplement for stories the entire classroom can read together to learn and reinforce skills.
