My Phantom Enemy

I forgive you for gifting me sadness, 

though all your gifts are like curses.

I forgive you for making me stand there,
A subject of your punishing verses.

I forgive you for stealing my grandfather,
though I miss his voice to this day.

His grainy laugh once gave me joy,
but you insisted on taking it away.

I forgive you for leaving me penniless,
money's evil after all, or so they say.

But money doesn't seem quite so evil, 

when you're hungry with no place to stay.

I forgive you for making me complacent,

now I crave peace and not to feel. 

But forgiveness means very little,

when your aggressor was never real.
