Curriculum

Writer's Workshop-

This workshop is broken down into 4 units of study. The first unit, Launching Writer's Workshop, acknowledges that most children will be labeling their drawings- and the letters in those labels may include squiggles. The second unit of writing, Writing for Readers, helps children write true stories. The third unit focuses on How-To Books: Writing to Teach Others. In this unit, students will learn how to write informational how to texts on a procedure that is familiar to them. In Unit 4, Persuasive Writing of All Kinds: Using words to make a change, students craft petitions, persuasive letters and signs that rally people to address problems in the classroom, the school and the world.

Reader's Workshop-

We will begin to establish our identities as readers while we build the foundational skills for reading. This workshop is broken into 4 units, the first unit, We Are Readers, we will develop concepts of print, phonemic awareness, and phonics. The second unit, Super Powers: Reading With Print Strategies and sight word power, glories in children's love of play as they learn "super power" strategies that help them search for the meaning, use picture clues, and work on fluency. In the third unit, Bigger Books, Bigger Reader Muscles, we will attempt more difficult books with greater independence and use reading strategies to read with more accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. The last kindergarten unit, Becoming Avid Readers, they pay close attention to characters, setting and plot while reading fictional stories.

Fundations-

My Math-

In this program, children will learn varying levels of math concepts through the use of manipulatives and hands on materials. Math is taught in whole group lessons, small group lessons, partner work and centers to combine and intergrate skills.

Guided Reading-

Each child will be assessed throughout the year to get an accurate reading level and they will be placed in a small reading group with other children on the same or comparable level. Children will have access to a variety of titles including online stories on Raz-Kids.
