Preparing for Kindergarten

Parents, 

Here are some skills to practice with your child to become more independent and prepared for Kindergarten:

Self Help Skills

• Zipping and unzipping backpacks, lunch bags and jackets

• Packing and unpacking backpacks

• Opening snacks, juice boxes, juice pouches, water bottles, and inserting straws

• Putting water bottles on the OUTSIDE side pocket of backpacks

• Buttons and zipper practice

• Tying shoe laces

• Opening and closing doors

• Cleaning up personal space

• Coughing and sneezing into inside elbow

• Bathroom routines

• Using scissors

• Putting on gloves

• Putting on and taking off shoes

• Learn to follow two-step instructions (for example: “Please go get your shoes and put them on.”)

• Social skills- sharing, taking turns, positive words, and handling anger

Reading/ Writing skills

• How to hold a pencil

• Recognizing their first and last names

• How to spell & write their first and last names (first letter

uppercase the rest lowercase)

• How to hold a book

• Practice turning the pages

• Writing and identifying upper- and lower-case letters

• Letter sounds

• Matching lower case letters to their upper-case letter match

• Sit and listen to a story for 5-10 minutes

Math skills

• Writing numbers 1-20

• Identifying numbers 1-20

• Counting 0-100

• Sorting objects by color, shape, and size

• Identifying shapes

In our classroom we practice you before me and trying our best to problem solve on our own before asking for help from an adult.
