Grade 2 Overview
1. Reading: this area of instruction is broken into three different sub-categories: literature, informational text, and foundational reading skills. Both literary text, and informational text are broken down further into the subheadings of: key ideas and details, craft and structure, and range of reading and level of text complexity. Foundational reading skills address the categories of phonics, decoding, word recognition, and fluency.
2. Writing: This area of instruction focuses on: types and purposes of writing, the production and distribution of writing, as well as: research to build and present knowledge.
3. Speaking and Listening: This area of instruction focuses on comprehension and collaboration through conversation and the presentation of knowledge and ideas.
4. Language: This area of instruction focuses on the conventions of standard English, knowledge of language, and vocabulary acquisition and use.
