English Language Arts

8th grade

Welcome to ELA 8 at Holly Shelter Middle School! I am excited to share my knowledge of literature and composition with you and to take you on a journey of self-discovery through the literature, art, and films of the world. We will be on-time, prepared, and engaged every day. Don’t forget to come to class with an open mind. Literature can take us everywhere! Come to class with “intellectual curiosity” - the desire to learn, to challenge yourself, and to try your best - and you will succeed in this class! I am truly looking forward to our time together.

"A community of readers is a group of people who share the common goal of reading and discussing literature and becoming literate human beings. This community is built upon mutual respect and a willingness to listen to and consider the merits of each member's ideas and interpretations."

– Frank Serafini, Around the Reading Workshop in 180 Days

Introduction to ELA

During the first few weeks of school, we will be establishing a community of readers and writers. Students will practice active listening, thinking, and engagement in our class as we consider the benefits of reading and the importance of stories. Students will practice meeting expectations during structured academic conversations and learn strategies to become active learners and critical thinkers.
