A course in Algebra I should be a prerequisite for a student who plans to take Algebra II or Geometry.
Tests
Tests will be announced in class at least three days in advance and may be given any day of the week.
A full day of review is given before each test, but no review will be given the day of a test.
If you are absent the day before the exam, you will still take the test with the class - be prepared!
If you are absent the day of a test, you have one full week to make it up before a zero is given.
Tests may be taken before or after school if arrangements are made in advance.
Quizzes
On most days there will be a Daily-Quiz. This quiz may be in the form of a Do Now, Exit Ticket, or an in-class activity.
Students will be expected to start to answer Do Now questions immediately after their arrival. Exit Tickets have to be completed and turned in by the end of class.
Quizzes cannot be made up.
Homework
Given almost every day (even on weekends)
Assignments that are on time and complete will receive a score of 10. For assignments that are on time but incomplete you will receive partial credit for the work you have done. In order for a problem to be considered complete, you must show all the work! Even when using a calculator, you must include steps taken to arrive at your solution. No credit will be given for papers with a list of answers! Showing no work, leaving problems blank or with a question mark is considered missing.
No homework assignment will be accepted more than 1 day late if you were absent. If you are absent the day an assignment is due, the assignment is due the day you come back. It is the student’s responsibility to turn-in any missing assignments.
If you are absent the day an assignment is given, check assignments on Google Classroom and submit it the day you return.
Do your own homework! This practice is critical to understanding the material.
Check the whiteboard and Google Classroom for a list of homework assignments daily!
Participation/Classwork/Projects
Students can earn a weekly participation score of 10 points by following classroom rules and participating actively in class activities and learning for the duration of the class.
Absent Work
Students have the same number of days that they are absent to make up for all missed classwork and homework. Students are responsible for printing out handouts (from Google Classroom), notes, or copying notes from a classmate.
Grade Report
In addition to Interim Reports, which go out halfway through each marking period, if a student falls below a 60, I will notify their parents/guardian via email with a gradebook report. These emails will continue weekly until the grade goes above a 60.
Rules and policies are listed in the BCIT Students Handbook, which can be found on the school’s webpage.
Classroom Policies
All school policies will be enforced including but not limited to the cell phone, dress code, plagiarism, and tardiness policies.
Classroom rules to follow:
Be respectful to yourself and others. Every student has the right to learn. It is the responsibility of everyone in the classroom to protect this right.
Students will be in their assigned seats with materials out before the bell rings.
Start working on your in-class assignments immediately.
Bring all necessary materials to class everyday.
Remain in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise.
Ensure everyone’s safety by keeping your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Listen to your teacher and follow the given directions.
Do not sleep in class or put your head down on the desk.
Pick up after yourself to keep your classroom neat and tidy.
Take care of your school’s property.
Do not use electronic devices like smartphones, tablets, earbuds in the classroom.
Food and drinks are not permitted in the class, except that each student may have a bottle of water.
Do not copy someone else’s work. Absolutely no cheating!
Wait for class dismissal before packing up to leave.
Submit your assignments on time.
Actively participate in class activities and discussions. Contribute to a pleasant learning environment.
Thank you!
I anticipate that most behavior problems will be resolved with a simple reminder.
However, if a reminder does not bring the student's behavior in line with class/school expectations, then I will follow these steps:
Warning - This may be verbal, a signal, or a look
Call home - The parent/guardian will be informed of the infraction
Write Up - The student will be written up for misconduct
Detention - It is at the discretion of the administration to assign a detention
If the well being of any person or belonging is in jeopardy, the offending party will be removed from the classroom immediately.
