The students are loving their choices in our flexible seating arrangement.
How does it work?
Students put away backpacks, and then find their name card, and place it where they would like to sit to begin the day.
Students MUST WALK, and it someone has already taken a place, they must find another.
There are plenty of options, so there aren't typically arguments, however arguments about seating options are handled as any other argument in my classroom would be.
Expectations for different types of seating are posted in the room.
As long as expectations are being met, students remain at these seats for individual work during the day.
If expectations are not met, students are moved where Mrs. Holtorf finds appropriate.
Why flexible seating?
Studies show that giving students choice helps them become more responsible, motivated learners.
To keep up with 21st century learning, "classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking." - Kayla Delzer
If students sit for long periods of time, it has a negative impact on their circulatory health. Flexible seating provides opportunities to move throughout the day.
This website has great reasons and some research behind the benefits of flexible seating.
