AP Studio Art
This is an upper level, year-long course which focuses on advanced techniques and applications. Although there is no prerequisite for this course, an understanding of design and drawing and painting is recommended. You should be self-motivated willing to work hard for the requirements of this class.
This class will build on the topics learned in Drawing and Painting:
Art history and contemporary art influences
Color mixing
Personal Expression
Elements of art and principles of design
Composition
Creativity and imagination
Choice of media
The class will focus on the AP portfolio. Students will work in their choice of medium and will work closely with the instructor to complete the portfolio. This course entails a significant amount of writing and reflection that will take place over the year.

Course Overview
AP Studio Art: 2D Design is a rigorous, college-level course in which students develop their artistic voice and demonstrate mastery of design principles through visual problem-solving. Students produce a portfolio of original artworks that showcases skillful technique, conceptual development, and personal expression.
AP Portfolio Requirements
Total of 15 digital works, submitted through the College Board's AP Digital Portfolio:
1. Sustained Investigation (60%)
15 images (can include details/process shots)
Demonstrates inquiry through practice, experimentation, and revision
Includes written statement (up to 1200 characters)
2. Selected Works (40%)
5 high-quality artworks (physical or digital photos)
Includes materials, processes, and dimensions
Demonstrates highest level of skill and intent
Materials Needed
Sketchbook /visual journal
Drawing/painting tools (pencils, pens, acrylics, watercolor, markers)
Access to mixed media, photography, or digital tools (Photoshop provided)
Portfolio or folder for physical work
Digital camera or phone for photographing artwork
Course Goals
Students will:
Develop inquiry-based visual ideas with intention and originality
Explore a wide range of 2D media (traditional, digital allowed)
Investigate design principles: contrast, balance, rhythm, unity, variety, etc.
Document their creative process through experimentation and reflection
Curate, refine, and submit a portfolio for AP evaluation
