OUR CURRENT STUDY: Insects
We are so excited to begin our new study on Insects. In our preschool classroom, we follow the Creative Curriculum, which means we aren't just memorizing facts—we are becoming little scientists! Instead of just looking at pictures, your children will be investigating, asking "Why?", and exploring the tiny, busy world right under our feet.
The "Big Questions" we will explore:
What are the characteristics of an insect? (How many legs do they have?)
Where and how do insects live?
How do insects change as they grow? (The magic of metamorphosis!)
What insects are in our community?
Who works with insects?
You don't need to be an entomologist to help your child learn! Here are a few simple ways to keep the "buzz" going:
The "Bug Walk": Next time you’re at the park or in the backyard, crouch down low. Ask your child, "I wonder where that ant is going?"
Read Together: Visit the library and pick out a mix of fiction and non-fiction books about bees, ladybugs, or ants.
Respectful Observers: Teach your child how to observe insects without hurting them, fostering empathy for all living creatures.
We can’t wait to see where this "buggy" adventure takes us! Keep an eye out for photos of our discoveries in the coming weeks.
Does your child have a favorite "creepy crawly" they’ve already told you about?
PARENT CONNECTION: Search for insects in your books at home. Point out their 3 body parts and 6 legs and name the insects.
Fine Motor Activities: Beyond the immediate fun, these activities serve a very practical purpose in your child’s development:
Foundation for Writing: Before a child can write their name, they need the "finger power" and dexterity to hold a pencil correctly.
Self-Care Independence: Developing these muscles allows children to master "big kid" tasks like zipping up jackets, buttoning shirts, and using forks and spoons.
Cognitive Focus: These activities often require concentration and patience, helping to build the "attention muscles" they'll need for more complex learning later on.
