Visme is a free online software, designed by Hindsite Interactive, which offers the possibility of creating presentations, inforgraphics and other visual content. A basic service is available for free and a premium service is available for users wishing to access all content and feature. It seems that Visme can be used for much more than simple presentations.
In the home page of the site there is a large range of options for possible projects. Visme specialises, however, in making simple, streamlined presentations and visual aids with a professional appearance.
Principally, Visme seems to be desinged for business purposes, however, the site is designed for a wide range of users from professionals to students and teachers. I could tell when creating my user account, as the drop down list provided a large list of business roles. It did, however, offer profile building for Students and Teachers. As a result, I can tell that this maybe a service which is not well adapted to education. This was seen in the templates and presets when making a presentation. Sections such as Promotion, Media, Sponsors & Business Trends mean that the presentations are in particular designed for the board room and not the classroom.
I was able to work at speed and with ease to quickly put together a simple presentation which looked great. My final product was well designed and easy on the eye. I was impressed with the number of templates, colour themes and the customisation available. It seems that the developers of this service have dedicated a lot of time to creating a large amount of pre-sets, which saves the user time when looking to deliver clean and simple slides that present information in an aesthetically pleasing way. This is a great advantage of the software and, in my opinion, offers a wider choice than more popular presentation services such as Google Slides, MS PowerPoint and OS Pages. A great feature is the presentation view mode. Like, MS PowerPoint, this option to view a timer, clock, presentation notes, next slide would be perfect for presenting and would help you stay on track when speaking to an audience.
Great for staying on track
The site is very easy to use and for users with experience using similar presentation software there is very little adaptation to undergo. A nice touch was that on my first use of the service, as I clicked to start a presentation, Visme opened up a YouTube of quick tips to getting started.
The only problems I encountered were with the limited amount of content available as a basic user. I noticed this when exploring the Forms & Shapes option. It seems that the most interesting features of Visme are reserved for Premium user. This was slightly frustrating.
Presentations can play a vital role when teaching ESL. The applications for presentations in general are vast. Although Visme is a great service, there are some drawbacks which would limit it's applications in a classroom. Firstly, Visme uses Cloud-based storage, so working across many computers was great. The disadvantage of this is that obviously, project cannot be accessed offline unless downloaded. This could have an impact in a class where there is no internet access. Most importantly, Team work is only available for premium users. I would assume that all users collaborating on the project need to be paying customers. When compared with Google and Microsoft, this is a major disadvantage. In general, Visme doesn't offer anything that MS PowerPoint or Google Slides don't already have. So, it leaves me asking the question, what's the point? It takes another username, password and a subscription to access all content. This could be very difficult to managed with students. Unfortunately, I think this would not be something I would think about using in the classroom.
Prezi required PayPal information for a subscription that would take place immediately after the trial period. This is something that I wanst comfortable doing. I have a habit of forgetting these types of things and then having to pay a fortune for them later. In any case, with the variery of free softwares available, I don't think that this wouldbe somethign I would use, even as a fully salaried ESL teacher. Also, this is obvioulsy something that can't be required of students. In conclusion, I would say that Prezi isn't really the type of software that we would look to use in the classroom. So although it may seem that I didn't get very far in my experience of Prezi, I think I found out all I needed to know for the purposes of this activity.
Payment details required to use trial version
This is a large amount to have to pay after the trial version I found. There's not much justification for ppaying this much.
