As a group, we decided to focus on student engagement for this cycle of the lesson study process. We found that when it comes to reading, and interacting with reading, students tend to engage less when it comes to informational texts. Our goal of this lesson was to engage students in an informational text by removing the title and any pictures included in the article. Students were tasked with
In this "RAR" I take a look at the concept of "creating meaning" while also interviewing a Knowledgeable Other in order to develop more ideas around my Lesson Study Group's problem of practice: How can students better connect/engage with lessons in a meaningful way?
In this "RRR" I take a look at how to better engage students in everyday learning through three articles to better understand my Lesson Study Group's Equity Based Research Theme: Students will begin with something they are knowledgeable about/connect with, collaborate with each other and share their learning.
Lesson Study
The lesson study process was a huge learning experience for me. Being able to collaborate with my group and seeing their pproach to lesson planning was an amazing experience. Having three different viewpoints and teaching styles allowed us to really create a wonderful lesson to service not only our focal students, but the whole class. Personally, some points of the process seemed a bit repetitive, or slightly redundant, but once we were able to expand on those points/practices it made more sense.
Takeaways
My main takeaway when it comes to this particular lessons study process is that students are able to learn best when they are asked to do something out of the box. For example, the general idea of our lesson was engaging students in informational texts. Students were handed an informational text I had removed pictures, titles and any headings from, in which they had to find the main idea of the article. Once they had found the main idea they would then move on to create a poster for the article. However, there was a catch for the poster, students were not allowed to use any words, besides the titles they had come up with for the essay. Students showed much more engagement in this assignment than they had previously shown as it allowed them to express their ideas in a different way.
