Positioned at an elevated location 506 meters above sea level in a wooded valley flanked by the dense Udawaththakelle forest at one perimeter and the vast kandy lake at the other, the core of the city is a series of old palace buildings and numerous temples and Shrines. Kandy is the home of the sacred tooth relic of lord buddha and is best known for the ' esala perahara ' the magnificent pageant staged nightly on its streets for almost a fortnight in august featuring adorned elephants and hundreds of dancers and drummers. In celebration of the continued rites and rituals of thr lost kingdoms of thr srilabkan people, kandy was declared a unesco world heritage site in 1988.

The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka. It is a breathtaking cultural pageant comprising of unique Sri Lankan traditions and customs with a history of over 230 years taking place in the hill capital Kandy annually, in honor of the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. . Known as Asia’s most spectacular religious and cultural pageant and a glittering festival of lights and colors it comprises of vibrant drummers and dancers and over hundred beautifully caparisoned elephants and magnificent tuskers in a breathtaking event that is not to be missed. The grand Kumbal and Randoli Pereheras will light up the streets of the medieval hill capital, Kandy, commencing from the 5th of August, with the final Randoli pageant taking place on the Esela full moon day on the 14th of August mesmerizing all viewers as it travels the streets in its fullest grandeur.

The golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. During puja (offerings or prayers), the heavily guarded room housing the tooth is open to devotees and tourists. However, you don’t actually see the tooth. It’s kept in a gold casket shaped like a dagoba (stupa), which contains a series of six dagoba caskets of diminishing size.As well as the revered main temple, the complex includes a series of smaller temples, shrines and museums.Freelance guides will offer their services around the entire temple complex for around Rs 600, and free audio guides are available at the ticket office. An elevator facilitates access for travellers with disabilities.
The complex can get crowded as it receives many worshippers and tourists, and backpackers, Chinese tour groups and Thai monks all jostle for space. Wear clothes that cover your legs and your shoulders, and remove your shoes.
