Next, we'll watch the presentation. It's powerful and motivating - the way she breaks down the concept of grit is absolutely inspiring! You have probably heard the word, grit before. Grit has been a buzzword for years, but really... what is Grit?
Pay special attention for this part of her talk: “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality.”
Group Discussion Questions
How does what you originally wrote in your journal relate with the (pay special attention) quote above?
What is the hardest thing you had to do today? What about ever?
What is your biggest accomplishment? How were you able to do it?
What are your goals for today? This week? The rest of the year?
So many students are purely driven by external rewards, especially grades at school - or awards in sports, or clubs, or activities - then when it comes down to pride, it’s definitely not the driving force for success. Students don't explore the concept of intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation nearly enough. Personal growth is such an important element for human development. Students need to access their internal drive for success and learn how to cultivate the want to be the best they can be. This is challenging, but a necessary component for developing a growth mindset.

Students are often so hard on themselves, many times creating unrealistic expectations and aiming towards perfection rather than looking to be the best version of themself as possible. Learning ways of self-compassion can help students in facing failures as they strive to adopt a growth mindset.
When you take care of yourself in the same supportive and understanding way you would when a loved family member or good friend is having a difficult time, or experiencing failure, or when you notice something about yourself that you don't like. This is self-compassion!
Three ways to model self-compassion are: appreciating self-kindness, addressing common humanity, & engaging in mindfulness.
Kristin Neff is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on self-compassion. She is credited with developing a working definition and in addition to establishing a means of measurement.
In this movie she explains what self-compassion is.
