Keeping your laundry clean and free from tough stains can be a challenging task. With everyday wear and tear, it's inevitable that clothes will become soiled with stains from food, drinks, and other substances. However, with a little bit of knowledge and the right techniques, you can keep your laundry looking clean and stain-free.
Act Fast!
The first thing you should do when dealing with a tough stain is to act fast. The longer the stain sits, the harder it will be to remove.
As soon as you notice a stain, remove the garment and start treating the stain right away. This will increase your chances of successfully removing the stain.
Identify the Stain
Before treating a stain, you need to identify what type of stain it is. Different types of stains require different treatments.
For example, protein stains (such as blood or sweat) need to be treated with cold water, while oil-based stains (such as grease) need to be treated with hot water and detergent.
We will drop another article on this blog to further explain how to identify the most common stains. Stay tuned!
Pre-treat the Stain
Once you've identified the type of stain, pre-treat the stain before washing the garment.
Apply a stain remover or a pre-treatment product directly to the stain and let it sit for at least 5-10 minutes.
This will help break down the stain and make it easier to remove.
Wash with the Right Temperature
When washing stained garments, it's important to use the right water temperature. Hot water is ideal for removing oil-based stains, while cold water is best for protein stains.
Be sure to read the care label on the garment to determine the appropriate water temperature.
Use the Right Detergent!
Using the right detergent is also important when trying to keep your laundry clean from tough stains.
Look for a detergent that's specifically designed to remove tough stains. You can also use a detergent booster or a stain remover to help break down stains.
Don't Overload the Washing Machine
Overloading the washing machine can prevent clothes from getting clean and can cause stains to set in.
Be sure to follow the washing machine's capacity guidelines and don't overload the machine. We often forget about this crucial step as we are so busy all the time.
Dry the Clothes Properly
After washing stained garments, be sure to dry them properly. Hang the clothes outside in the sun, if possible, as sunlight can help remove stains. Shake each item before hanging.
Shaking throws out the wrinkles, un-bunches hems, plackets, and sleeves, and softens the garment. After shaking, finger press hems or plackets that like to roll.
If you're using a dryer, make sure it's set to the appropriate temperature and use dryer sheets to help reduce static and prevent wrinkles.
