Welcome to my website!
Hello! My name is Ash, and I've been a teacher for 13 years. I've run a social media page for teachers @mrcurmisclassroom (⬅️click to view) for several years now which has opened up many doors in my career including presenting the topic of classroom management at the National Education Summit ('24 and '25).
I've also mentored pre-service teachers/PTTs and been a voice for behaviour at the schools I have worked in. Through my online presence, I strive to share authentic and practical evidence based ideas and strategies that help teachers foster and maintain a calm, positive and successful classroom.

My classroom management philosophy began in 2013, when I became fully accredited as a Primary School Teacher. Like many beginning teachers, however, I quickly discovered that the transition from university to the classroom was significant. Across four years of university, my practical experience consisted of four practicums and a six week internship (a total of 15 total weeks in the classroom over FOUR years).

Evidently, this was not enough time in the classroom (view my journey here). I was able to manage behaviour to an extent, but did not have the exposure nor experience IN the classroom to address behaviour in the long term. Common advice from both university and experienced teachers/admin was - "have you used a sticker chart?" or "try to give the student 3:1 positives to a negative".
The next 13 years working in a variety of educational settings shaped a much broader view of my classroom management philosophy. Behaviour is layered, and lasting change rarely comes from simply responding to what we can see. If we want to influence behaviour in the long term, we need to look beyond the surface and examine the structures, expectations, relationships, teaching practices and underlying needs that sit beneath it.
This sparked my interest in starting @mrcurmisclassroom back in 2020, to developing a portfolio of work in this website, including releasing my first ever course - classroom management!In this course (5 full video lessons) we aren't covering separate teaching strategies. We are covering 1 framework through 5 connected lessons, delving beyond the surface and uncovering the foundations that influence every interaction, routine and behaviour in the classroom.
