In keeping with our goals of developing life long learners and aligning with the Massachusetts Physical Education Frameworks our portion of the Wellness Program focuses on the importance of the total health picture. Along with Health classes, the students in Physical Education will learn the importance that good physical, mental, social, and emotional health play in their leading healthy, happy and productive lives. These disciplines will encourage the students to make good choices and to take positive steps to improve their current health, prevent future health problems and recognize and accept responsibility for their own health.
Units that may be covered include:
Cooperative Games
Cardiovascular Unit / Heart Rate Unit (IHT Heart Rate Watches)
Fitness Testing (Mile Run)
Creative Movement
Team Sports
Grades are on Powerschool:
We are now on Powerschool and will not be sending emails home unless it is completely necessary.
The following number codes (shown in the grade column) are an indicator of your child's current progress in Physical Education:
10 Point Grading Scale - Daily Points
6 points - effort, knowledge, completion of warm-up, assessments, skill development & safety
2 points - being prepared and on time for PE
2 points - social emotional learning (peer cooperation, teamwork, overall behavior & self-awareness)
Consequences for not being prepared for class within each trimester:
1st time = verbal warning/loss of daily points
2nd time = verbal warning/loss of daily points/email home to parent or guardian
3rd time = verbal warning/loss of daily points/email home to parent or guardian
4th time = loss of daily points/email home to parent or guardian/meeting with administration and school councilors.
*Positive and negative behavior will be handled according to the school behavior rubric.
Daily Routines:
All students are required to attend PE in proper athletic attire for hygienic and movement safety purposes. They may wear clothing such as sweatpants or shorts and t-shirts or sweatshirts. Students must wear sneakers to participate in PE. If a student wishes to change prior to PE, they have locker rooms available to them. Please discourage children from bringing valuables (cellphones, jewelry, money etc.) to class. If students have valuables that need to be safely stored, they can give them to a PE teacher to put in a lock box.
Students must perform a Warm up of the day to warm-up. (WOD)
Medical Excuses:
If a student is to be excused from PE class, a parental note, or electronic communication prior to class is needed. In the case of a serious illness or injury, a doctor’s note is required. Students that do not have a note, or parental/guardian communication to excuse them from class because of an illness or injury, will lose preparation/participation credit for that day. If a student requires an inhaler during physical activity, please consult the school nurse in order to keep one in the building.
