Hello,
My name is Thomas Halvas, and I am a second year teacher at Mills Park Middle School. I graduated from East Carolina University (Go Pirates!), where I hold a degree in history education.
I am originally from Long Island, New York. I spent quite a bit of my youth there before moving to Raleigh, North Carolina with my family. I attended Heritage High School and graduated in 2020. Throughout my high school journey, I actively engaged in varsity wrestling, cross country, and track and field, while also being a member of the National Honor Society.
It was during my junior year of high school that I decided that I wanted to become a teacher. During my K-12 years in education, I was fortunate to meet educators who were kind, approachable, and supportive. Their guidance, assistance with assignments, and genuine concern for my well-being left a positive influence on my personal and academic growth. I was heavily inspired by my teachers as I often looked up to them as role models. This was when I discovered a passion for helping others achieve their academic goals which created a positive and supportive learning environment too.
My love of history further helped to solidify my decision to become a high school history teacher. By incorporating my love of history to my future students, I aspire to create an engaging, impactful, and enjoyable learning experience for them, where they will be given the opportunities and resources for success.
During my time at ECU, I have had the opportunity to observe a 9th-grade level class at North Pitt High School, as well as engage in student-teaching experiences at South Central High School. My time in these schools has provided me with insight into teaching as a profession from the view of an adult, where I have developed even more respect for teachers due to the numerous responsibilities and deadlines they must meet. Through my interactions with students, I have developed a deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work teachers invest in preparing their students for their post-graduation endeavors, just like how my teachers helped to guide me through school.
As a college graduate who is now working full time as an educator, I do acknowledge that my journey toward becoming the best teacher I can be is an ongoing process. I am aware that the first few years of my teaching career will present plenty of opportunities for growth and development. I am even aware that I as a teacher will be a lifelong learner, meaning I will still be learning about myself, the teaching profession, and new topics related to my subject. I know that my enthusiasm, passion, desire to help others, and love I have for history will set me up for success by helping me become an amazing educator cherished by both students and colleagues alike.
