Denouement

Act VII: Saving Black Beard’s Hide

The quartermaster's song works, silencing the sirens. You see a tall, bearded figure stand up on the Siren's island and take stalk of his surroundings. You grab a spyglass to look closer and are elated to find it's Bartholomew! He must have fallen under the spell of the sirens' song, too. He dives into the water and swims alongside the rest of the crew to your boat. The ship is saved and you've found the man you were looking for!

Upon returning to the deck, Bartholomew, in his mighty stature, begins to skulk in your direction. Everyone is silent. Ten paces away, you notice his demeanor softens. You stand to meet him. He digs into his pocket, and retrieves your silver compass. Smirking, he tosses it to you and quickly turns to face the rest of the men, "Aye! Where's me tank'ard of rum!" The crew stop staring as the cabin boy runs for his drink.

The quartermaster summons, "Where's that boy! Send'em to my quarter." Walking toward the cabin, you recount the day's events: you partook in your first pirate raid; you were nearly drowned by a Siren, and you helped outsmart the rest of the Sirens. It's been a busy day, but you're still not sure why you're here or what the symbol inscribed on your family's compass means.

You head to the Quartermaster's cabin, hoping to gain some insight. You've had very little time to reflect between all of today's near-death experiences. Entering the cabin, you spot a journal laying on the fur skins. It bears the same design as the compass. The Quartermaster is wearing her signature red coat, but, for the first time, you notice the embroidery at the bottom.

She grins at you expectantly.

Could there be a hidden message around here? Somewhere on this page?

The ship rocks furiously. The winds roar, lightening strikes, and the waves pound the deck above.

Just as you learn the family secret.....

You awake in a pool of drool, eyes opening wide in a eureka moment.

"Great Scott!" you shout. "Now I see my family tree."

The other patrons turn from their work to survey your abrupt disruption. Oblivious, you gather up your materials, and grab your mobile phone.

You race to share the revelation with the rest of your family. The stories are true; you have pirate blood in you.

You make a mental note: Google deals on houseboats. You dash off to your old '81 Volvo. As you drive away, you think of all the possibilities. Your journey has just begun...
