The Covid-19 pandemic led to several conferences and seminar series getting cancelled, but research communities are also doing a great job at keeping in touch virtually and more inclusive opportunities of sharing knowledge are sparking all over the globe.
As early career scientists (ECRs) ourselves, for May, June and July 2020, we proposed a series of weekly webinars to give the opportunity to ECRs, PhD students and Post-Docs, working on topics related to Mathematics of Planet Earth, to share their work with researchers at all levels in the field. We hosted (by Zoom) contributions on the following topics:
PDEs and SPDEs in fluid-dynamics;
Numerical models for fluid-dynamics;
Dynamical systems: critical transitions and linear response in the Earth system;
Data analysis methods for climate records.
Once a month we also hosted a plenary session of senior researchers working in the topics above. We hope this was an opportunity to share their expertise and vision on the future of Mathematics of Planet Earth with the younger generations of researchers.
The organizers,
Giulia Carigi (University of Reading & Imperial College London)
Francesca Elisa Leonelli (University La Sapienza & ISMAR-CNR, Rome)
Gabriele Sbaiz (University of Trieste & ICJ Lyon)
Milo Viviani (Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg)
