As part of our music curriculum, we will be recording rehearsals this year. This practice directly supports both the California Arts Standards and the National Core Arts Standards, which emphasize the importance of student self-reflection, self-assessment, and critical listening.
Through these recordings, students will develop their ability to:
Listen for blend and balance
Improve posture and embouchure
Refine technique and overall performance quality
Please note:
These recordings are for instructional use only and will never leave the music classroom.
They form part of your child’s assessment, which is embedded in our curriculum and fully COPPA compliant.
If you prefer for your child not to be recorded, they will either be blurred in the video or placed in a location where they are not easily identifiable.
In addition to recordings, our students use a Music Performance Reflection | Concert Evaluation | Self-Assessment worksheet. This resource provides a grade-level comprehensive evaluation that helps students identify areas for growth and set actionable goals to improve both individual skills and ensemble performance.
This tool empowers students to take ownership of their musical development and strive for excellence in every performance. More than just a worksheet, it encourages them to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and continually improve—a growth mindset that is crucial for their learning and development. By significantly enhancing assessment and reflection, this self-assessment tool raises the bar for performance standards in our program.
The reflection worksheet can be used with upper elementary music classes for any instrumental or vocal performance or daily practice. We use it throughout the year—after our winter and spring concerts, during music festival performances, and as part of everyday rehearsals.
Self-reflection is one of the most valuable tools for self-assessment. It helps students look inward, celebrate successes, recognize areas for improvement, and take meaningful steps forward in their musical journey.
Thank you for supporting this important learning tool. Recording and reflection give students a powerful way to hear themselves, measure progress, and grow as musicians.
