The mouse is the primary input device used to interact with objects in Windows. Mouse functionality can also encompass other pointing devices, such as trackballs, touchpads and pointing sticks built into notebook computers, pens used with Windows Tablet and Touch Technology, and, on computers with touchscreens, even a user's finger.

Mouse devices often have a primary button (usually the left button), a secondary button (usually the right), and a mouse wheel between the two. By positioning the pointer and clicking the primary and secondary buttons on the mouse, users can select objects and perform actions on them. For most interactions, pressing a mouse button while the cursor is over a target indicates the selected target, and releasing the button performs any action associated with the target.

All pointers, except the busy pointer, have a single pixel hot spot that defines the exact screen location of the mouse. The hot spot determines which object is affected by mouse actions. Objects define a hot zone, which is the area where the hot spot is considered to be over the object. Typically, the hot zone coincides with the borders of an object, but it may be larger to make user's intent easier to perform.

The mouse has been a successful input device because it is easy to use for the typical human hand. Pointer-based interaction has been successful because it is intuitive and allows for a rich variety of experiences.

Right-clicking, double-clicking, and clicking with Shift or Ctrl key modifiers are three mouse interactions that aren't intuitive, because they have no real world counterparts. Unlike keyboard shortcuts and access keys, these mouse interactions usually aren't documented anywhere in the UI. This suggests that right-click, double-click, and keyboard modifiers shouldn't be required to perform basic tasks, especially by novice users. It also suggests that these advanced interactions must have consistent, predictable behavior to be used effectively.

The standard mouse interactions depend on a variety of factors, including the mouse key clicked, the number of times it is clicked, its position during the clicks, and whether any keyboard modifiers were pressed. Here is a summary of how these factors usually affect interaction:

Not all Windows environments have a mouse. For example, kiosks rarely have a mouse and usually have a touchscreen instead. This means that users can perform simple interactions such as left-clicking and perhaps dragging-and-dropping. However, they can't hover, right-click, or double-click. This situation is easy to design for because these limitations are usually known in advance.

Using a mouse requires fine motor skills, and as a result, not all users can use a mouse. To make your software accessible to the broadest audience, make sure all interactions for which fine motor skills aren't essential can be performed using the keyboard instead.

Provide users a margin of error spatially. Allow for some mouse movement (for example, three pixels) when users release a mouse button. Users sometimes move the mouse slightly as they release the mouse button, so the mouse position just before button release better reflects the user's intention than the position just after.

Have clicks take effect on mouse button up. Allow users to abandon mouse actions by removing the mouse from valid targets before releasing the mouse button. For most mouse interactions, pressing a mouse button only indicates the selected target and releasing the button activates the action. Auto-repeat functions (such as pressing a scroll arrow to continuously scroll) are an exception.

Don't use double drags or chords. A double drag is a drag action commenced with a double-click, and a chord is when multiple mouse buttons are pressed simultaneously. These interactions aren't standard, aren't discoverable, are difficult to perform, and are most likely performed accidentally.

i was looking for a way to have 2 monitors but have a mouse pointer on each one so i can do 2 things at the same time, my second "monitor" is a small 7 inch display touch screen, i want to be able to use the small display as a touchscreen only on the second display while i use my mouse on the main one, thanks

Also, I have checked some Stack Overflow posts, but all of the Microsoft pages are deleted that are in the posts and also, I have founded a package called pymultimouse but I don't know how to use it and it's in python 2 and not python 3.

We need large mouse pointers with different colours for training: One for the trainee that is active, and a pointing-only mouse-pointer for the trainer. (Optionally the trainer could actively use his/her mouse and also click stuff, but the pointer should in this case change colour or give a visual feedback.)

Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen. This option prevents windows from automatically resizing and docking along the sides of your screen when you move them there.

I recently switched to a four monitor setup and have an external display #2 (main display) just above my laptop monitor #1. When I try to move my mouse pointer between the monitors (highlighted in the image linked below) with (and without) a window, it sticks to the horizontal edge between them. This doesn't look like windows snap issue as windows does snapping in the verticle edges, and the pointer doesn't literally stick to the edge.

The issue is with the settings app auto-arrange / placement for muti-monitors that will sometimes look right but in fact cause the edges between some monitors to become "sticky" requiring higher mouse velocity to pass through.

I had a similar issue with a 3 monitor setup, where when arranged using the Windows 10 "display settings" dialog some of the monitors would have a small gap between them. This would cause the mouse to "resist" when you would try to move between screens.

Since the bug comes from gap between screens, someone proposed to use re-arrangement from graphic card to delete gaps, but for example, with my 6 screens, i got 2 cards, so it doesn't help me,so you just need to find a software to arrange monitors with more precision than windows, you can do it easily with DisplayFusion (it will tell you the distance in pixels between screens), hope it will help some of you.

-The cursor does not go invisible in fact but turns from color black to color white whenever it hovers over an editable field (=enter text) where the default Windows mouse cursor typically is being replaced by the so called "text cursor" as shown below:

In Windows 7, there were a number of options which are missing in Windows 10. For example, previous versions of Windows had more appearance options that modern Windows versions don't have. One such option is the ability to prevent Windows themes from changing mouse cursors.

As you can see, the option "Allow themes to change mouse pointers" has been removed from the dialog in Windows 10. However, the ability to activate this function is still present in Windows 10 and can be activated with a Registry tweak. Let's see how it can be done.

You don't have to play with different refresh rates -- another way to get rid of the second cursor is to move the Windows mouse cursor to the upper-left corner of the desktop while the game is loading after double-clicking on the OFP icon or selecting it from the menu, or you can Alt-Tab from OFP to the Windows desktop and back.

gonk is correct, the problem only occurs when the game is set to use EXACTLY the same video mode as windows desktop, so you can change the refresh rate, resolution, or color depth in the game (or windows) and avoid the problem.

Mister Frag's solution is the easiest, you just got to remember to do that while the game is loading. If you forget, open the options->video menu and change ANYTHING that would cause the game's render driver to restart. Eg. W-Buffer on then back to off is probably the easiest, but any other video option will work (not game ones like draw distance though) I don't recommmend ALT-TAB because it can change you Gamma, and sound Volume as you move to and from windows desktop.
