The area close to Lake Fenton is an attraction when the Fagus is in colour, but is a nice spot at other times of year too. There is a variety of plants and views of the lake along the track. I think it would be nice to include a short walk that goes as far as the last major bit of Fagus, a distance of 600 metres from the carpark. After crossing the bridge, the length is 340 metres to the end point.
There is also the option of including a few signs like the “you are here” ones at significant spots.
A few of the rocky bits could also be made easier without requiring a lot of work.
I thought it could be included on the proposed walks sign for the Fenton carpark. Fagus Walk has a nice sound to it.
Brendan and Trevor both support the idea.
I am considering lodginga funding request to Wildcare. The upper limit is $2000 + GST.
Based on this it might be feasible to include 2 or 3 days of contract labour, working with FOMF volunteers and PWS staff to improve the track. Some of the rocks may need moving out of the way and replaced with flat one. The other costs are signs and posts. PWS may be able to supply incidentals such as a little gravel fill.
Sample of a sign that might be useful along strategic spots
For site when facing south or westerly
A little rockier here and could be smoothed out somewhat to make walking easier
A section with low bushes giving views of Lake Fenton
Boarded through part as it goes through a thick stand of Leptospermum lanigerum
Path quite easy in parts
View to Lake Fenton
Pandani
A grove of Fagus
Rockier section that could be improved
Track a little rocky and could be smoothed a bit
Last Fagus bushes and the end of the walk. A sign will go here to indicate that.
