In the United States, there are three USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Calendars: Endurance, Gravity and Ultra-Endurance. USA Cycling runs the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships. There are mountain bike racing types that are not recognized by the UCI, such as mountain bike orienteering that is governed by the IOF.

Mountain bike racing is as old as the first appearance of the mountain bike itself, when the originators, calling themselves klunkers, descended with their heavily modified beach cruiser bikes as predecessors of modern mountain bikes from numerous mountains in California against a rudimentary time measurement. The famous Repack racing down-hill against the time near Fairfax, Marin County, CA took place in 1976.

The oldest organised cross-country (XC) racing-like event, however, is believed to take place from Crested Butte to Aspen in Colorado in 1978. It took 10 years before the UCI recognised racing on mountain bikes as a regular cycling discipline in 1990. In the meantime, the phenomenon of mountain bike racing spread across the U.S.A. under the umbrella of NORBA.

Mountain bike racing became an Olympic discipline in 1996 and a cross-country type mountain biking race has been held ever since its debut at the summer Olympic games in Atlanta. Given the enormous variation of terrain a mountain bike can navigate, a division took place as a cause of riders' specialisation.

The main events in mountain bike racing are the cross-country event at the Summer Olympics and the World Championships and World Cup organized every year by the UCI at various venues around the World.

Electric bicycle races include Enduro World Series's EWS-E, Union Cycliste Internationale's E-Mountain Bike Cross-country World Cup and Fdration Internationale de Motocyclisme's E-Xbike World Cup.

The Pro MTB Cross-Country Tour (Pro XCT) offers cross-country Olympic-style (XCO) and short-track cross-country (XCC) racing. Most of the events on this calendar are UCI-sanctioned, allowing elite riders the opportunity to earn valuable UCI ranking points. Pro teams registered as either a UCI trade team or USA Cycling domestic pro MTB team are also eligible for professional team rankings.

The American Mountain Bike Calendar (AMBC) was created in 1996 to recognize, support, and provide top-level regional racing opportunities for racers of all abilities. AMBC competitions are excellent places for riders to try the racing scene for the first time or seasoned athletes to test their skills against their fellow racers. All AMBC events offer cross-country racing, with some events also including downhill, dual slalom, four cross, short-track cross-country, and/or observed trials competitions.

The USA Cycling Mountain Bike State and Regional Championship is to recognize the best mountain bike racers in each state and region. Through the USA Cycling MTB State and Regional Championships, riders will be eligible for state and regional titles and medals, along with being able to qualify and compete at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships.

The Leadville Trail 100 MTB was first held in 1994 and has since become one of the most challenging and prestigious mountain bike races in the world. Riders take on a grueling 100-mile course that includes about 12,000 feet of elevation gain, reaching a peak elevation of 12,600 feet above sea level at the summit of Columbine Mine. Over the years, top athletes from around the world have come to Leadville for the ultimate test of Grit, Guts and Determination, on their quest for the coveted silver and gold beltbuckle.

As one of the most well-known mountain bike races on earth, getting into the Leadville Trail 100 MTB has always been difficult. LT100 Qualifiers are long and tough, with lots of climbing. They are similar to the classic course at Leadville in that they consist mainly of rugged jeep roads of gravel and dirt. A qualifier event could not only gain you entry into the LT100 MTB, but it could also boost your corral starting position in the Race Across the Sky!

Whereas the previous Orbea Oiz was available in both 100mm and 120mm travel variants that utilised the same chassis, the latest Oiz is now purpose-built around 120mm of travel front and rear. This commitment has allowed Orbea to optimise the geometry and bring it right up to date. Along with the increased travel and the fact that it comes with 2.4in tyres and a dropper post as standard, the Oiz is one of the most fun and capable XC bikes out there.

A brand new model for 2023, the Specialized Epic World Cup is the result of a 4-year project to build the ultimate XC race bike that combines the responsiveness of a hardtail, with the big-hit control of a conventional full suspension bike.

While rear travel is conservative, geometry is very progressive with a 66.5 head angle and a hefty 58mm BB drop. It all adds up to create a responsive and highly involving bike to ride, though one that prefers to be pushed hard and fast to get the most out of it. With this in mind, riders who prefer a plusher ride quality and are after a more versatile XC bike will be better off looking at the longer travel Epic EVO.

As one of the most popular and long-standing XC bikes on the market, the Giant Anthem underwent a wholesale redesign back in 2022. Moving away from its classic Maestro suspension design in favour of a simpler single pivot arrangement, the new Anthem frame has shed a hefty amount of weight and now stands as one of the lightest options on the market.

Unlike many XC bikes, the Ninety-Six features a non-proprietary rear shock, which is appealing from a long-term ownership perspective. Also appealing is the fact that you can get a Ninety-Six for less than $6K, which is almost unheard of these days in the world of carbon full suspension race bikes.

Unfortunately the same downsides also carry over, with the headset cable routing being our main bugbear. And given that Merida has the Ninety-Six RC as the race bike, we reckon it could have done without the remote lockout on the regular Ninety-Six models to help declutter the cockpit.

What this ongoing test series has made abundantly clear is that modern XC bikes are getting really bloody good. All of these bikes have impressed us in one way or another, and their unique personalities and quirks will make them appealing to different riders.

This study aims at describing the workload demands during mountain bike races using direct power measurements, and to compare these data to power output and physiological findings from laboratory exercise tests. Power output (P, Watt) from 11 national team cyclists (9 male, 2 female) was registered continuously during 15 races using mobile crank dynamometers (SRM System). To evaluate the intensity of racing, incremental exercise tests with determination of P at aerobic and anaerobic thresholds (AT, IAT) and at exhaustion (MAX) were performed. Intensity zones were determined (zone 1 < AT; AT < zone 2 < IAT; IAT < zone 3 < MAX; zone 4 > MAX) and time spent during racing in these zones was calculated. Based on power output measurements P during racing was 246 +/- 12 W (male) and 193 +/- 1 W (female). P showed high variation throughout the race. In contrast heart rate (HR) was relatively stable during racing (male 177 +/- 6 bpm, female 172 +/- 7 bpm). 39 +/- 6 % of race time were spent in zone 1, 19 +/- 6 % in zone 2, 20 +/- 3 % in zone 3 and 22 +/- 6 % in zone 4. MTB races are characterized by a high oscillation in P with permanently elevated HR. A highly developed aerobic and anaerobic system is needed to sustain the high variation in workload.

Hi everyone! I am new to cyclocross and will be doing my first racing season in October! I currently have a lightweight mountain bike that I plan on racing with. I will very likely invest in a cross bike if I plan on continuing and getting more competitive, but am not in the financial place to invest in a cross bike currently. 17dc91bb1f
