We are excited to have you as a participant in the Mount Afton Challenge. Our goal is to host an event that provides a worthy challenge for Runners, Ruckers, and Walkers... and we hope it delivers. Regardless of your category, several race day rules remain the same. Specific runner and rucker instructions are outlined in separate sections below along with prizes that are up for grabs in each division.
The Mount Afton Challenge will last 2 hours from 8 am to 10 am. Please arrive at least 20 minutes early so that our volunteers can get you checked-in and ready to race.
Participants check-in: 7:30 - 7:50 am
Participant meeting: 7:50 am
Race begins: 8:00 am
Most of the race course will be on community streets; however, there is a small stretch where participants will be on a sidewalk. We ask that all participants stay to the right while on the sidewalk to allow room for others to move past you on the left. Other areas of the course will have directionals to help point the way, but it should be fairly clear after the 1st lap. Also, keep in mind that approximately 1/2 the course is in a residential area. We ask that you please respect our neighbors while in this section of course.
Water and basic nutrition will be available at the start/finish line. Participants should bring any specific race day nutrition they prefer. Also, bathrooms will be available near-by. The locations will be reviewed pre-race. Volunteers will also be available to point participants in the right direction as needed. Additional bathroom details are provided below.
Although the challenge will last 2 hours, participants are welcome to modify as necessary. Registration does not commit you to continuous running/rucking/walking for 2 hours unless you want the challenge. It is simply you vs. you… what can you do in 2 hours!
Stick around afterwards for the post race celebration. The Wine Room in Afton Village is opening early to serve food and drinks while we all recover and relive the days festivities. They have been a great partner for our event and we hope you will stick around and give them a great post-race crowd.
Run as many laps are you can in the allotted time. The cut-off time to start your final lap is 9:55 am. Volunteers will help provide notice regarding the time.
For those competing in the rucker division, a minimum ruck weight of 20 lbs. will be required. The weight is only a requirement for participants going for the Mountain G.O.A.T of Afton title. There is no weight requirement for ruckers not competing. The cut-off time to start your final lap is 9:55 am. Volunteers will help provide notice regarding the time.
Yes... The Mount Afton Challenge will once again have prizes up for grabs in both the runner and rucker divisions. The Mountain G.O.A.T. of Afton is the runner and the rucker that logs the most laps in their division on event day. In the event of a tie in the total # of laps, the 1st participant to finish their final lap will determine the winner.
Rules for those competing:
The cut-off time to start your final lap is 9:55 am. (Volunteers will help provide notice)
GPS verification will be required to determine the winners in each category. If you don't have GPS tracking, you will not be able to compete for the Mountain G.O.A.T. of Afton title.
Ruckers must have a minimum ruck weight of 20 lbs.
The course is a 1-mile segment with 75 feet of climb, which includes a trip up and down the almost world-famous Mount Afton. Participants are mainly following community streets, but a small stretch of sidewalk was necessary to avoid main roads. The route has limited exposure to traffic and mainly follows lightly traveled areas. The start/finish line is located at The Wine Room patio intersection in Afton Village. Multiple bathroom locations will be available during the event. All are in close proximity to the start/finish line and the route.
QT bathrooms will be available throughout the morning.
The Wine Room will open bathrooms around 7:30am.
9Round bathrooms will be available after 7:00am.
The locations will be reviewed pre-race and event volunteers will be able available to direct participants as needed. Click the image to see an enlarged view of the locations.
The Mount Afton Challenge is happening rain or shine. In the event of snow or ice looming in the race day forecast, all participants and volunteers will receive communications regarding any adjustments to the schedule.
